What exactly happens when you delete your account?

    This is just for future reference. What exactly happens when you delete your account? Do all of your old posts remain exactly as they are? If so, is your profile still accessible by other members (that is, if you deleted your account and all your old posts remained, would someone still be able to click on your username, go to your profile, and find all your other posts)? Do usernames remain on the posts, or are they changed to guest/anonymous? Lastly, why do people even delete their accounts - what is the benefit of doing so, if all of your posts remain?

    All of your posts remain as they were.
    Your name is still attached to the posts.
    Members can not click your name to view your profile.
    Example: The OP of this thread.

    People may delete their account for a lot of reasons. Some people get upset over a thread or post(s) made by other members. Some are angry at the staff for enforcing the Code of Conduct. Some just don't want to spend time on EC anymore, and deleting their account may stop the desire to get on the site.
    Probably the most common is that someone creates an account one day but is afraid of being 'outed' the next, so they delete it.

    Everyone has their own reasons for it, though.

    Alright, thanks. As an experiment, I checked what happens when you type in someone's username into the search bar (even if their account has been deleted). Some threads they started or answers they gave still come up as a result, but in bits and pieces. Eh, no system's perfect I guess.
