Hello EC, Since this morning, I've faced multiple errors while trying to access some of the sub forums. I have attached two screenshots, just in case you need more context. Hope you fix this problem. And thanks a lot for creating and maintaining EC!
Hi. Is this problem currently going on for you? If not, how long was it happening? We do have a backup routine that runs twice a day and takes about 20 to 30 minutes. During that time, the database slows to a crawl. If it happened during that period, that's a problem we are aware of and will eventually fix. (It requires new hardware). If it is happening for longer than 30 mins or more than twice a day, pinpointing when it is happening and what forums are affected would help.
This happened to me too yesterday. When I tried accessing the homepage or any other forum as well. I closed my browser, waited for 5 minutes and tried again. It worked and all the sub-forums and the main page opened as usual.
Ah, o got the same thing yesterday, so I picked up my phone ten minutes later and refreshed and it worked
Oh, that happened to me last night as well! Just loading the home page to login did it for me. I don't know when it resolved, because I forced myself to go to sleep. It was at 12:10ish AM EST
This error happened to me again this morning at 10:41 a.m. IST (05:11 AM GMT on 23rd Dec 2015). I had to rush out for some work so I didn't bother checking after a while. I don't know how long it took to come back to normal.
True that. It happened again today at 10.41 am IST (05.11 am GMT) the same time as the other day. It lasted all of 10 minutes. I'm not complaining about it. It doesn't hurt if the site is inaccessible for a couple of minutes. I'm just passing information
Just a few moments ago (between 12:10am and 12:25am EST), I got the same messages and it's connected to the database backup from what I can tell. The backups are done more frequently than before the data loss, and roll back.
If I'm not mistaken, our backups run now at midnight and noon, Eastern time. Before, they were running at something like 2pm and 2am. Given the ineptitude of the technical team at our ISP, I'm reluctant to ask them to change it since the backups seem to be actually working at the moment. I think what is happening is that the database has grown substantially (it's about 9 gigs now, up from 2 the last time I looked, which was 4 or 5 years ago.) So each time the backups run, it drastically slows down the database server, which causes the database errors. Sometime early in 2016, we are going to be switching to a new hardware platform that will have two separate database servers. My understanding is that this will pretty much eliminate the 20 minute downtimes twice a day and provide also for more robust backup and redundancy options. So hopefully that will solve this problem in the long run.
Just noting that I received multiple database errors. I have screen shots that I can send you Chip if you need them.
Fortunately as far as I see it, the inaccessibility to the site is for a maximum of 5 minutes give or take. So I feel that happening twice a day is completely ok. I'm sure we could use a 10 minute break in a day from the site :roflmao:
