Forum becomes unresponsive at the same times?

    I'm not sure if it's because of routine maintanence or if it's a bug, but usually around 5PM or 5AM (BST), the forum seems to "stop responding" for a good few minutes or more. As in, it will constantly load for a while and then says it gave up because it took too long to respond.

    The "Welcome" page works perfectly fine during the time, but if it requires entering the "Forum" or "Members" page or a profile, it doesn't seem to want to load? :confused:

    My guess is that you are seeing this around the times that the backup is running. I have the same issue at 12pm and 12am here in my time zone.

    About 10 past 5 to be more exact. :icon_wink Yup, this is when EC runs it's back-up script. For some reason it takes the site down temporarily, causing us all to become irritated. Sometimes if you try and post during this time, it'll result in an accidental double post. This is something the team are working on eliminating in the future!

    Kind of explains it then. An older service I used had a similar problem, except it caused chats and avatars to lag insanely with a 5 minute delay for a good hour. <.> :lol:

    Basically, what's happening is, twice a day, a backup script runs that makes a complete copy of the database (which contains all messages and other data.) The database is huge, and it takes most of the database server's resources to dump out a copy of the data.

    So when regular users are trying to retrieve pages or, particularly, to post, there are almost no resources to write to the database. Basically the site will either hang completely, or be incredibly slow for the 10-15 minutes it takes for the backups to happen.

    This problem will go away when we switch to the new platform in the next several months.

    Whole new platform, totally different software. About 9 years newer technology :slight_smile:

    This is happening to me too, except it's all the time, and it's annoying because there is something I really want to ask. Glad to know I'm not the only one.

    The server is Unix-based, I guess that there's a backup script running as a cron job or the like. Maybe lowering the priority of it with nice or ionice or whatever... :wink:
