Mobile Skin

    I have just installed a mobile skin for the Empty Closets forum. This is currently a trial to see how people get on with it.

    It allows access to the forum and private messages ONLY. It does not have any access to the wall, albums, blogs, chatroom etc. The membership upgrade form does not work correctly.

    For now you have to select it manually from the selector at the bottom left of the page. To change back to your normal one you need to log out and log back in.

    If it works OK for people I will set it up so that mobile devices always use the mobile skin and normal browsers can't select it.

    Comments welcome please.


    UPDATE: There is now a "Normal Mode" link at the bottom of the mobile page which brings you back to the default skin.

    Is a mobile skin really neccessary? I only say that because the majority of mobile phones can access full scale internet and do almost anything that a full on computer can. I have a sidekick and that's how I access EC the majority of the time when either I'm away from my house or my brother is on the comp.

    This is what I want to get feedback on. On my mobile phone, Nokia N82, the full EC is quite difficult to use (scrolling around a big page with a little screen) and the mobile one is much easier. Do people think it is useful, quicker (less stuff to download), easier etc. Or are most people who access the site from phones etc happy with the full skin?

    If people do use it, do we want it to be selected automatically (like Facebook Mobile) on mobile devices or do we want it as a selection (like now)?

    It renders on my Eee's 800x480 screen much better than the default theme, which craps out on anything less than ~930 wide. Personally I'd like for it to continue to be available for PCs, even if it requires access via a roundabout way.

    I reckon have a mobile skin, make it automatic, but on the front page have a link that says "view in normal mode" like most websites have :slight_smile:

    Coz I use my iPod Touch and sometimes I find it easier just to view things in normal mode (coz it's really easy to zoom in) but others I use the mobile version :grin:

    Can we have the ability to change back to the default skin? Normal EC works much better on my iPhone.

    Just played with the new skin a bit and I do like that its loads way faster but for me personally I like the full better. Although this new mode might make my battery last longer lol. I also agree with what lychee said about giving, those of us that access the site via mobile device, the choice to switch to normal.

    It's a little easier for me to read on my blackberry - so I'm indifferent towards it. Thanks for checking it out though.

    Not everyone has one of those expensive phones that can do that, with mine on the default setting it takes forever for the site to load and i cant see the whole screen, I have to move it around and with a mobile skin, its faster and i can see the whole thing

    I like the mobile skin.

    I only ever log onto my phone for a quick check and mini post.

    MUCH easier.

    A "Switch to Full Mode" link is obviously needed. I'll see if I can figure out how to add that. Then even if it is automatically selected for mobile devices people can choose the full version instead (as with Facebook).

    Exactly what I was going to say. Plus there's a lot less to download so if you are paying by the megabyte it's cheaper!

    That's why I have unlimited web for my phone.

    And brandford I dont consider my phone to be that expensive lol.
