Well... people are invited by existing staff to become a moderator. This happens after they've been in the community for a fairly extended period, shown themselves to be valuable contributors to the community, have a pretty even temperament, and good judgement.

There are no specific rules that I'm aware of on a minimum age for a moderator, though I don't think we've had one as young as 13 yet.

If you ask me moding a forum isn't as easy as it sounds. Well the one forum I'm a mod on how would I say you need nerves of steel and a good temper! So its not an amazing glamorous job!

(Just some thoughts from my experiences as a mod on other places. )

I think the normal age is 18, though I think there's some chat mods that are 16.

As mentioned to be a mod you have to be very active (look at a mod's post count vs. join date) and show good judgement. In addition there's more work than what you or I see in the normal forum. There's a staff only forum where issues and policies are discussed, there's looking into reported posts, etc.

There is no set age. When Chip said that we hadn't had one as young as 13 yet, that's just the way it has happened, and didn't have anything to do with their age.

Most of the current moderators started out as advisors or chat moderators and were then promoted. Advisors are brought onto the team because of their consistent good advice and willingness to help others on the forums, and currently we don't have any chat moderators, but when they have joined staff in the past, it's because they've been chat regulars who have proven themselves to be sensible and intelligent.

The youngest mod I think was Helen when she was 15. And there was a time when there were quite a few of us under 18.
Then we got older.

But that's not really true.

Unless I'm mistaken, Joey only had 300-600 posts when he first became a mod.

It's not about the amount of posts you make, it's about the quality of them, and of course, many other factors.

I believe you are mistaken xD I made a shit ton of posts between the date I came to EC (December 4th, 2008) and when I became a Mod (June 2009). Just sayin.

It might've been Ben. I think he was here a short time before he got promoted?

Yes I had around 200 posts and I'd been a member only for a few months at the time.
But then I was very active in the chatroom and I was made a chatmod, so quantity of forum posts wasn't really the most important thing.

Padre became mod after only a few weeks (or months?) So it's not just time of being here.

Padre is an advisor, not a moderator.
