I'm having problems attaching photos to posts.

They are .jpgs, and within the size and dimension specification. I get the message "Upload of file failed".

I tried placing it on my web server and pointing it to the URL and I get the error:
"Upload of file failed", even though the server logs show it as successfully transmitting the file. I get this problem with both Firefox 2 and IE 6.

It seems to be working OK for me.

Is anyone else having problems? Perhaps a couple of people can try in this thread to test it.

    What error do you get?

After clicking the Browse button to select them you must click the Upload button to actually upload them. I assume you're doing this?

Also what security software do you have on your computer? Maybe that is preventing uploads, and you need to set an exception there to allow file uploads to EC.

It rejects any size image, including a small 3KB, 143x99 pixel GIF
After I select the file and click upload it waits a couple seconds (as it sends the file) then says above the "upload files from your computer" area:
    "Upload Errors
    green.GIF:
    Upload of file failed. "

If I go via upload file from a URL, and point it to my server, my server shows EC's server successfully downloading the the file, then I get the error:
    "Upload Errors
    http://IP.IP.IP.IP/Reg.jpg
    Upload of file failed"

I can upload photos to my galleries section with no problem.

As far as security software, I have is Windows firewall, AVG, and a hardware router. It does it in both Firefox and IE.

Here's screenshots of what I get. These files uploaded to my gallery just fine, but they won't attach to messages.

Here's what the error for a normal file attachment looks like
    [IMG]

If I use the URL uploader I get this error:

Even though my server log shows the transfer to EC's server was successful

Is this when uploading from your computer or when uploading from a URL?

I have only ever used the uploading from computer option so don't know if the other one works or not. Perhaps those who have used it can comment?

I don't see any option to upload from my computer. It just says insert the web address.

Are you using the [IMG] button? That is for linking to an image that remains on another site, and the address has to be directly to the image file, not just to the page. You cannot upload a file from your computer with that.

To attach an image you need to click the [Go Advanced] button then scroll down and click [Manage Attachments]. You then get the screen shown in post #11. The "Upload File From Your Computer" should work fine from there.

If trying to "Upload File from URL" the URL must be accessible on the Internet. A URL on your local network won't work as EC cannot access it.

It does seem that some people are getting this while others aren't. One of the mods has tried with his account which doesn't work and his partner's account which does from the same computer. So this rules out the computer, the connection and the method.

I will investigate further later. There may be a permissions problem on the upload folder on the server or something...

For now perhaps you can upload to your gallery, leave it in the hidden gallery and use the [IMG] button here to link to the image location.

I forgot to mention, a couple of weeks ago I reset the permissions of all the attachment folders and subfolders (there are hundreds of them) and their contents so that the forum software has full (read, write and execute) permissions. A few folders didn't before, which may have caused the problem for some people.

Fortunately FileZilla (an excellent free open-source FTP, SFTP etc client) allows you to apply permission changes to a folder and all subfolders, so it did all the work!

I noticed Becky managed to post an attachment a few days afterwards too, so figured it must have worked.
