is a default smilie that comes with vBulletin software (as are smilies such as :confused2: :rolleyes: ). The code used to make that smilie appear is what vBulletin automatically sets it up as, and I believe it's meant to just be an embarrassed face, rather than one that is considered to be smiling (even though it is doing that too).
though on topic, i was trying to make surprised face with colon and o, and it returns a smiling face lol
If you type o: it works just as well, and no weirdly satisfied-looking purple smiley appears. That's what I typically do.
You could also put in a space, or a dash for a nose, or use a zero or a capital-O, like so: : o :-o :0 :O

If I do the : o face on my phone, it turns it into a 'cool' face (the one with sunglasses, typically represented by B) )
