Does any one here listen to folk music? From what countries do you like?

I like Norwegian, Icelandic, and Old Norse folk music a lot. They have so much charm and personality to them.

Oh I love folk music! It's so cultural I just love it. I'll listen to it from any country honestly, but I have to say that because of where I'm from that I love Rocky Top even though it's a little embarrassing to admit. Best darn banjo pickin' I ever heard.

Sami folk is also hauntingly beautiful.

Not sure if you'd count ambient neo-folk, but if you do, I love the Finnish band Nest.

Oh my god Bob Dylan. Now that's some good stuff there. Knockin' on Heavens Door is probably one of the greatest songs of all time.

Admittedly I have not listened to much folk music from outside the states, but absolutely love that from within. Mainly from the pre-war era of early blues, country, etc. There's an inexplicably 'rough' character to it, especially when it veers on the dark side, and the melodies can be damn catchy.

Don't be embarrassed. You aren't the only one. I love lots of the mountain music I've heard. And I really like bluegrass, too!

Same here. I'm not really familiar with much from any other cultures.

Some of my favorite artists are:

    • Alison Krauss (even though she's more mainstream now)
    • Emmylou Harris
    • Mac Wiseman
    • Ferron
    • Ricky Skaggs
    • R. Carlos Nakai (Native American instrumental)
    • Christine Lavin
    • Nanci Griffith

I like a couple of folk-ish bands (not sure that they're quite the same kind of folk as the stuff you guys have linked, though). Trampled by Turtles are a band that used to be punk and then changed to folk/bluegrass, and they're stuff is pretty crazy (alternate picking like you've never heard):

Also, Violent Femmes are a better known band (pretty much everyone has heard Blister in the Sun even if they don't know it yet), but they're slightly less folky. Gordon Gano is brilliant, though; I can't recommend them enough:

This tune of theirs is more country:

Note: Most of the Femmes songs I listed are less folk ones. Tunes like "Out the Window" demonstrate it more.
