So I'm currently watching the broadcast with my boyfriend, and Peter Capaldi has just been announced. I seriously couldn't wait to see a thread here on it. More articles will definitely have more detail than this one, though.

    12th Doctor

I am very angry about Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor. Livid. Peter Capaldi is dead in the Whoniverse; he committed suicide in Torchwood: Children of Earth. I am not pleased as this continuity-breaking decision, and I don't think he can act the part well. Thoughts?

Hahaha... 30 seconds after I posted mine in the News forum.

I honestly couldn't tell you. I've never seen anything from Peter Capaldi, much like I'd never seen anything from Matt Smith.

But ya know, there's Moffat for you. Pleasing you with the shittiest things on Earth.

Capaldi. But yes. I kind of expected someone I wouldn't have ever heard of.

    Re: 12th Doctor

There've been a good few double castings, like Gwen and Gwyneth. If fans feel strongly enough they'll probably find a way of explaining it away.

I've seen quite a few (white) people unhappy that a doctor of a different race wasn't picked, since the BBC are obviously refusing to deviate from their formula and just push some boundaries.

A doctor of a different skin colour would have been great, especially if a big deal wasn't made about it, but I'm personally just happy to see an older doctor. It might mean they're able to get rid of some of the stupid romantic and overemotional storylines that have been dragging down the plot throughout the Moffat era. I'm not getting my hopes up about that, but I like to think it's a possibility.

The problem with an older doctor is it breaks the trend. In each regeneration, the doctor gets younger in appearance, and it's been that way since the start.

I've never seen it. Would I have to start at the beginning to understand it?

I agree... but I think at first it was just coincidence, then somebody caught onto it and decided to insist it continued for no discernible reason. There's no in-show logic that dictates it has to happen so it doesn't logically defy anything, it just looks a bit odd from the fans' perspective.

Besides, if they continued to get younger then the thirteenth doctor would still be in short trousers. :rolle:

The very beginning was many episodes ago -- back in the 1950s or something -- and not all of them have survived. You can start with the Ninth Doctor, who was the first in the 2005 reboot, beginning with the episode "Rose", or with the Eleventh Doctor, who came in "The Eleventh Hour" in 2010 and has just finished his third series. Both of those will make sense as starting points. (Whilst the Tenth Doctor is much loved, beginning with his section of the timeline would be trickier.) However, it's a show involving time travel, so skipping around a bit doesn't matter much. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Actually this isn't the case. Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy were both older than Peter Davison. And Jon Pertwee looked older than Patrick Troughton in many instances. Certainly it's the case for NewWho, but definitely not ClassicWho.

Part of me is glad that they are going back older, because it is far more reminiscent of the classic series. Although part of me is going to miss the young quirkiness of Matt Smith...

This is awesome  He is a great actor. The Thick of It was awesome, he was a politician witch a huge temper and every other word out of his mouth was a profanity. Kinda like this

Also he has been 2 characters in the Whoniverse, he was also that Roman from the Pompeii episodes. As others have said there have been actors who have had more than one role, Eve Miles and the girl who played Tosh in Torchwood

This so much. The idea that the Doctor gets younder is out of place. The age "higher or lower" game would look like this.

    1st > Younger (2nd) > Older (3rd) > Younger (4th) > Younger (5th) > Older (6th) > Older (7th) > Younger (8th) > Older (9th) > Younger (10th) > Younger (11th) > Older (12th)

Another random fact is that Capaldi is actually joint oldest at the time of starting the role, as William Hartnell was 55 when he first appeared.

I'm super excited to see how he'll turn out as 12. It's impossible to judge at current point.
