I would have to disagree on the grounds that many ground-breaking cinematic techniques have cropped up since 1915.

I don't know. I tend to think of the gold standards which are kind of long and sleepy by today's standards. I think of "Gone With The Wind," which has periodically been put back in theatrical release. I've seen it twice. It's interesting, but long. Nowadays, a pastor type can say "damn" on the pulpit, and nobody would bat an eye.

Never heard of it. For me, one of the best films ever made was 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Spiderman 2 was a fun movie but in no way qualifies as the best. There's too much stupid stuff in it.

I have to be honest, I have a hard time judging Birth of a Nation from cinematic stand point due to its racist content.

I honestly don't know what I would call the best filem ever made. I'd have to give it some though.

I don't know who labeled it as the best anything. The racist content ruins the cinematic value for me. Just wanted to see if you agreed with me.

True it did; but it had the best dialogue, the right amount of mushy stuff; the best performance of Toby McGuire as Spider-Man, and let's be honest; I'll take Raindrops keep falling on my head anyday over Saturday Night Fever strut Emo Peter Parker.

It definitely is the best of the three. I still don't see it as best movie ever material.

Probably not the best ever. But for its time it is definetly the best by far

    - Metropolis (1927)

I believe it is considered the very first science fiction/ fantasy movie. The story is very good, and the special effects are amazing considering it was made in 1927.
If you like film and you've never seen it, I would highly recommend watching it.

I personally am a little young to know about some of the titles you guys may know.
I did really love Inception, and I consider both Miyazki's Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle as masterpieces. I guess you can't count the last two for being animated :3.

I don't think so. In my eyes, even if the film is incredibly important, it in no way warrants the title as the best. Film is like any other medium, if it can't withstand the test of time, then it probably doesn't warrant a "best" title. If something already feels dated after not even 100 years, then it will feel dated in 200 years.

I'm not a hater of classic movies either. There are plenty of classic films that can be enjoyed just as much in the time they are written as in the present (Casa Blanca, Wizard of Oz, most things by Charlie Chaplain).

No love for LOTR? Before Peter Jackson's movies, high fantasy was something nerds did at DnD parties. Afterwards, it was completely in vogue, in no small part because they were so freaking epic.

I don't think I can choose a single best movie ever though. It's way too subjective to decide if one is better than another across topics and genres.

Metropolis is truly an amazing film, way before its time, and extraordinary with the depth of plot, concept, special effects for its era, and social message.

More current films... if we're talking about "best ever made" overall... that's an extremely difficult question for me to answer. But I think if we're talking most beautifully photographed/designed film ever, I would probably go with A Single Man.

I've gotta go with Gone with the Wind. However, anything with Jimmy Stuart I love like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.
