I saw this book on the shelf a few years ago, its 6th and last book came out this year. Oh. MY. God. go read it. the series is brilliant. i've shared them with my co workers not a single one could stop reading them and needed the next one as soon as possible. i had to actually go into town and buy one for her on the day it was released because she didn't want to wait for me to finish it.

Its set in a fictional american town called Perdido beach where we follow one of our many protagonists named Sam. the book starts right off the bat when every person over 15 disappears suddenly and without reason. He and some others discover a large barrier that encircles the town, out to sea, through a Forrest area and even some open dessert with a nuclear power plant acting as the center of the entrapped area.
wondering what to do since they cant get out and with no adult supervision the children and teenagers are lost until the children from the boarding school for the rich and troubled on the outskirts of town come to try and bring some order, particularly one boy called Caine. However there methods and caines manipulations have Sam and others on edge.
At this point we learn some of the children and wildlife have started to mutate and gain special abilities. a cat attacks a boy by teleporting, one girl accidentally starts a fire and Sam's crush has an autistic brother who may have some abilities too. Sam himself is hiding an ability he had long before the barrier appeared.

I cant give much more than that away because the story is too good. Each chapter follows one of the many characters and has a countdown to some major event that happens near the stories end. There are some grisly deaths for minor characters and even some main characters: no one is safe in these books. there are love triangles, some romances that last the entire series, some that don't. there are even a few gay/lesbian characters who are some of the most bad ass in the series.

And yes i am aware that Stephan Kings under the dome has a similar theme but this came out first. he's even written comments in the reviews in the books saying he loves them. my brother got all excited when the trailer for under the dome came out because he thought it was gone till i pointed out there was no way those actors could pass for 14. dumb ass.

There are however trailers for the books and talks of it being adapted into a movie or tv series. here are the links for the us and uk book trailers

    1) Gone the first ones not that good and american trailer only

    2) Hunger shows some of the powers but none of the plot uk only

    4) Plague this is where things start to get really nasty and really dark. once again us one has some dodgy scripting and acting while the uk one goes for the creepyness and silence. that being said caines actor is hot.

5)Fear once again very dark and has one of the most twisted scenes (in book) ever. will never make it to film. unless its animated an has a 18 certificate. uk only trailer.

I've read these books, I think they're pretty good. Very, very dark though. When I was reading the second (Hunger) I stayed up most of the night to finish it because I kept thinking "I can't go to sleep after that bit, I'll have nightmares," so I'd carry on and then think "Well that bit was horrible, I need to carry on reading"... and then I'd finished the book.

lol i know exactly what you mean. when plague came out i had this horrific cold with a very violent cough. cue certain chapters and the fact my cough was keeping me up anyway i stayed up through the night and finished it.
Favorite book in the series? mines got to be light. As the trailer says "the ending is the best part." Grant and his wife did another series when i was 9 called animorphs which was good, but nearly everyone agreed the ending was a let down because it did not really end, another fight took place with the outcome left up in the air and the war neither won nor lost.
with this series that is not an issue, there is most definitely an ending, whether its happy or not im not saying lol.

Mine's Fear, I like the level of darkness in it. Also, I've read most of Animorphs and used to really, really love them as a kid, but I don't think I ever finished the series.

After watching those trailers, I hope they don't make a film of the Gone series. It would probably suck.

all depends who directs and writes the script. i dont think they could do live action though, not without alot of dawsons casting. grant has said he has been approached about adapting this or another of his series bzrk into a film or series. the animorphs series was a huge disappointment, so i can understand him being picky with this series. i would like an adaptation but only if it has the right director, the money to make it good and a cast who can act.

I freakin love this series, it's one of my favorites. I started it in like 6th grade and (obviously) finished it this year. Yes, it's very dark, but extremely well written with fantastic characters. And <SPOILER ALERT> did you not think it was ironic that other than Astrid, SAMs two closest friends were gay/lesbian? I seriously didn't see that coming with Edilio but it made me love the books all the more.

I think they started getting better in plaque (story wise) even if it was darker. And basically all my favorite characters lived so I was very happy with the ending, even though was a bit unrealistic considering a ton of the minor characters were killed off. Lol as you can tell, I really loved this series XD

    spoilers

until he said he was i didn't think Edilio would be gay, but i had suspicions that the guy who would be his boyfriend would be when we first met him. i love how your perception of certain characters changes from book to book as well. someone you love from one book can become a complete ass hole or psychopath in the next one and vice verse.
i love the fact that these books got trailers, ive never heard of a book, particuarly a young adults book series, getting trailers.

Sony Pictures bought the rights to a TV series of Gone earlier this year

Hirac Delest » Sony Pictures acquires TV rights to ‘GONE’!

Who knows if they ever plan to use it though, they've been sitting on the rights to an Animorphs movie for years and haven't capitalized on it. Though I think Animorphs would do better as an animated TV show, there's too much stuff to put into a single movie and it would be too CGI heavy if they did it live action (Though CGI has improved since their last attempt to make it a TV show).

Hirac Delest » Sony Pictures renews Animorphs Movie domains!

lol there's a fifty fifty chance its happy or sad, you'll have to find out which.
