It's implied (both in the show and by the creator) that Max was his lover.

Even though some of the characters I am going to include are stereotypical I do find them humorous.

The queen of England (Hellsing) I think. Alucard was a girl in the 40's, so maybe.

I can only think of one on the spot, but it's from a book.

Sage Hendricks is the main trans character in "Almost Perfect" by Brian Katcher(sp?) and she's probably my favorite lgbt character because it's one of my favorite books.

Oh, and Piper Chapman (as well as most other characters) from Orange is the new Black

 

Honestly I don't watch enough things with LGBT characters (Or things where LGBT characters are well written) and the only ones who truly stand out as fantastic are Omar from The Wire and Max Bloom from Happy Endings.

Special nod to Gus from Breaking Bad though, not sure he entirely counts, but if it's definitely a valid interpretation of him.

-Richie from Static Shock (Fun fact, if anybody remembers that show off Cartoon Network from awhile back, his character in the original comics was gay, and the show vaguely alludes to it a few times)

yeah I'm really scrounging for people at this point. At least I did get 10 off the top of my head, though I know I have more. This made me realise how rare it is to come across really interesting, well written LGBT characters or at least prominent ones, heh. I hope to see our roles in fiction expand from being mostly tragic victims or comedic relief as time goes on.

 

Oh man, I completely forgot about Ray. I love him (and the show).

Persona 4 is one of the best JRPGs ever, you should definitely play it. Also, umm, SPOILERS, but they cop out on Kanji's sexuality, and it's kinda disappointing. I think most fans usually assume he's still closeted gay or whatever, but the game just shrugs it off. I still love his character arc though, since it at least focuses on breaking gender roles.
