It doesn't have to be traditional folk at all, just anything that can be described as folk. Personally I get really into artists like Nick Drake, Bert Jansch, Pentangle, John Renbourne, Joan Baez, Jim Croce, etc. etc. What about you guys? Or am I all alone?
I like traditional folk and have been playing Celtic music as a hobby for around 5 years. I don't really know many names; though, I like Joan Baez.
Really into Damh The Bard at the moment (it's pronounced Dave...at least that's what I've been told by friends who have seen him...he also never plays live sober apparently).
Ah, Nick Drake! Things just don't get much better than Nick Drake! I listen to a fair number of things that are folk/folk inspired. I was thinking, if you like Nick Drake, check out the first album by Belle and Sebastian, called, 'If your're Feeling Sinister'...very amazing stuff. I like a lot of earlier folk as well, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Leo Kottke, Ramblin' Jack Elliot. I heard this very young chap by the name of Jake Bugg who sounded nice; reminded me a bit of Nick Drake: Jake Bugg-Country Song
Folk music covers such a huge area. I certainly like some of it. Not just western music either. ---------- Post added 4th Dec 2013 at 11:11 AM ---------- I would have to say I'm more into bluegrass though.
Kim Ye Rim or Lim Kim (same person) is considered to be a pretty good Korean Folk artist. I have her album "A voice" and I really like it! You should check it out ahah
I like a bit of the late 60s and early 70s British psych- and folk-rock like Donovan, Pentangle and Fairport Convention, especially The Wicker Man soundtrack. This is a good list I found which has lots of the kind of stuff: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seminal-Acid-Folk/lm/14KVJMB8IB52F I don't know as much as I'd like though, definitely a lot more for me to discover. If you count 60s artists like The Byrds and Simon & Garfunkel as folk-rock then them too, plus obviously Dylan, and Phil Ochs too. Oh, and Joni Mitchell, how could I have forgotten her? The only name I know in folk music is Gordon Lightfoot. He's really old-school now, but I always liked his stuff. I also love Scandinavian and Celtic instrumental folk songs, but couldn't name any for the life of me. :S
I love Celtic; The Chieftains, Loreena Mckinnet, Dulahan, to name a few. Dar Williams and for real old school Pete Seeger.
