Ooh, good question... I know with iTunes, there's a folder where all of your music is, and if you uninstall it and reinstall it it'll just sync with everything that's in that folder. I really don't know if it's the same with Windows Media Player. Someone who actually uses a Windows computer should probably answer it. >_>

What I'm going to say is a general rule which is true for many programs.

Lots of programs (like Windows Media Player, Windows Live Messenger or Mozilla Firefox) will only allow one running instance, so if the program doesn't exit properly a new instance might not start up.

You can always check out your process list by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL and clicking "Task Manager" where applicable, then opening the "Processes" tab. In lostinthought9's case, there was probably a nonresponsive entry corresponding to "wmplayer.exe" (Windows Media Player)

If Windows Media Player won't open, it will 99% of the time be still running invisibly, so just Ctrl+Alt+Del, go to the Processes tab and find wmplayer.exe and right-click > End Process. Now you'll be able to open windows media player. =) This seems to be a small random glitch that occasionally happens where the player closes but the computer still thinks it's running.

    Random Tip:
Another way to bring up task manager is to press CTRL-Shift-ESC This is very handy in networked environment where CTRL-ALT-DEL brings up a box asking if you want task manager, lock the work station, change password, etc.

Random Tip 2: To lock the machine you can also press Win+L

oooh oooh! I was looking for that shortcut!

cause in Vista whenever you pressed ctrl+alt+del, it gives you a list of options and stuff, which can be annoying sometimes.
