REM: Losing My Religion. It's a Gay Song!

Discussion in 'Entertainment and Technology' started by uniqueusername3, Jan 5, 2014.

  1. R.E.M. - Losing My Religion (Official Music Video) - YouTube

As a child of the 90's (I was born in '85) - this song was basically the soundtrack to my youth. It was on the radio all the time, and while I knew all the lyrics I never really thought they had much meaning.

But then, by chance, I listened to it again the other day on youtube and almost started crying.

It's about realising you're the closet - "losing my religion" is finally admitting to yourself that you're not straight.

    It's just beautiful.

R.E.M. LYRICS - Losing My Religion

    Oh life, it's bigger
    It's bigger than you
    And you are not me
The lengths that I will go to
    The distance in your eyes
Oh no, I've said too much
    I've said enough

    That's me in the corner
    That's me in the spotlight
    Losing my religion
Trying to keep up with you
And I don't know if I can do it
Oh no, I've said too much
    I haven't said enough

I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

    Every whisper
    Of every waking hour
    I'm choosing my confessions
Trying to keep an eye on you
Like a hurt, lost and blinded fool, fool
Oh no, I've said too much
    I've said enough

    Consider this
Consider this, the hint of the century
    Consider this, the slip
That brought me to my knees, failed
What if all these fantasies come flailing around?
    Now I've said too much

I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

But that was just a dream
    That was just a dream

    That's me in the corner
    That's me in the spotlight
    Losing my religion
Trying to keep up with you
And I don't know if I can do it
Oh no, I've said too much
    I haven't said enough

I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

But that was just a dream
    Try, cry, why try?
    That was just a dream
    Just a dream
    Just a dream, dream

I've seen an interview with Michael Stipe where he said it was a song about an obsessive, unrequited love. Granted, Michael Stipe is bi, so it's possible that the person he's singing about is another guy. But I don't think it's about being in the closet per se.

Maybe, I could see it in the lyrics, but I was also looking for it in the lyrics so I dunno.

    A few months ago I was listening to this and immediately checked out the wikipages after these lines;

Consider this, the hint of the century
    Consider this, the slip

as in this song about ''losing religion'' and ''choosing my confessions'' is about the singer trying to come out of the closet. Like this song is the freudian slip that most won't notice. It turns out that this isn't the case, but you can understand every lyric ever in multiple ways because there is no clear answers in language, like there is in math.

R.E.M is an acronym for Rapid Eye Movement, psychology term for a type of sleep you get into where you mainly dream. And the title gives it away
