Just watched L'A Vie D'Adèlle (Blue is the Warmest Color)

  1. Hi, everyone!
So, I've just watched L'A Vie D'Adèlle (Blue is the Warmest Color) and I would like to know what were your impressions on it.
Me, I thought it was beautifully recorded, and I loved those little scenes of details of daily life. The sex scenes lasted a bit too long to my taste, but I get that the idea was to show the intimate relationship of two girls/women. The acting was wonderfully aware of details, and the scenes looked quite real. I also liked how the characters matured and how adult they acted by the end of the movie... but it felt like "oh, another LGBT no-happy-ending movie..."
That's kind of sad, since I liked the movie, but nothing can be perfect, right?
So, what were your turn-ons, turn-offs, your yays and mehs about this movie?

Haven't seen it yet, I'm still not sure if I want to. I have a lesbian friend who said she found the sex scenes horribly long and way too... intricate. I'd like to watch it so find out if it's really worth the Palm d'Or, but judging by the critical response I'm assuming it only won the award because it was provocative.

  3. Another major problem with the movie, besides de sex scenes, was the lack of a scene that explained how Adèle's relationship with her family turned out from the middle of the movie onwards.
It's not a bad movie, but I guess I have to agree with you: not a masterpiece either in general :/

The sad ending is the reason I'm not watching the movie. :frowning2: I'm allergic to sad stuff. Okay, maybe I'll watch it until the ending.

Blue is the Warmest Color is now on Netflix. I just finished watching it. I agree it is not a masterpiece, but I enjoyed it.

I had a hard time keeping up with the time line, as it did not seem to pass consistently. I am glad they went with the sad ending. It annoys how romance movies often go with the happy ending, as that is not how life is. I do wish they had showed more of family relationship, Adele's.

My take on the movie is that she is dealing with internalized homophobia, and how it damages her relationships.

It sounds to me like it's based on the graphic novel Blue is the Warmest Color, which I have yet to read. I want to order it from Amazon. I had no idea it was a movie. Gonna read the graphic novel and watch it now.

i loved this film! i watched it just as i was beginning to embrace my sexuality, and tbh its the first film i have seen depicting a lesbian relationship / themes of coming out, first love, etc.. (i dont watch many films!) so i think that is why it has stuck with me so strongly.

my favourite scene is where adele cries in bed and stuffs her face with chocolate, for me it so perfectly captures what it feels like to struggle with ones sexuality plus i love the scene where she dances at her 18th - she is so alive and young ! the sex scenes made me laugh, it was so obviously shot like a porn scene. but the rest of the film was beautiful. i hope to read the book soon!

what were your favourite / least fave scenes?

I don't think it was a sad ending at all! The changes in Adele's character are the most depressing aspect for me - from being a feisty schoolgirl at the start (the protest scene is so good!) to becoming merely a timid muse for Emma. Although her future is ambiguous, she's at least allowed herself to be independent again.

The sex scenes are awful and overlong, yes, but they still only take up a few minutes of three hours. Adele probably spends more time eating pasta. It's definitely a film worth watching despite them: I've never found a fictional character to feel so much like a real person before. When you see Adele go through her most pivotal moments over the course of many years, you almost feel as though you know her as intimately as you know your closest friends. It's weird.

The director's behaviour during the film's shooting puts me off the film a lot more than the sex scenes. Fortunately I only found out about that after watching it...
