Ok long story short: I use an FTP client called "SmartFTP Client" and had my username / password for a website saved in the program. A few weeks later, I try to start the program and it tells me that I need to purchase the full version to continue using it (previously the trial period was unlimited, but it appears they changed it). Problem is, I can't find where I wrote down the username/password and so have no access to the website without paying to buy the product. Anyone know of a way to retrieve the password/username? I know its a long shot heh.
Your best bet is probably to contact whoever runs the website and get them to reset your password. Or set up another account there.
if you can't start the program at all one of those might help this one http://www.rixler.com/download/ftpasrec.zip or this one http://www.nsauditor.com/downloads/spotauditor_setup.exe
Slightly unrelated to your request but maybe relevant.... If you want a decent FTP (and SFTP etc) program for Windows without spending any money, have a look at FileZilla. It is free open source software (like Firefox and OpenOffice) and works very well. I use it regularly, and it's the only FTP program I use. Highly recommended. It's also available for Linux and OS-X.
Depending on how smart your SmartFTP is you could turn back the clock on your computer and see if it still recognizes it as in the trial period. Then once you have it running you can run a packet sniffer such as ethereal or smsniff while the client connects to the server and extract the password (assuming you are using garden variety FTP with no encryption)
I did a quick test of SmartFTP where I ran it, turned the clock ahead past the trial period, ran it and it just redirected me to buy it, then turned it back again and it still thought I was in the trial period and worked normally, and still remembered my password. As I mentioned smsniff is a simple little packet sniffer. Connect and then read your password
I've never used SmartFTP but in their support forums someone suggests going to Tools --> Settings ---> Interface ---> Show Passwords You'll probably have to change back time as mentioned above but it would save you from worrying about the packet sniffer. Filezilla is a great free and open source FTP client that I also use and also recommend.
which won't work if he can't start the ftp client, otherwise this would have been my first suggestion but maybe the clock thing works.
Well I'm just about to head to work, but I'll definitely all the suggested methods tomorrow I'll keep everyone posted.
