Well, you could start by giving us some idea of what you are interested in, or what you think you might like in terms of themes or genres.

I mean I could sit here literally all day recommending you anime shows and you might have almost all of them because I hit the wrong ideas first.

Anime ranges from epic war dramas, sci-fi, robots, cute things, sexy things, high school, magic, animals, folk stories, samurai / historical pieces...it's got potential for almost ANYTHING.

Crunchyroll - Watch Naruto Shippuden, Bleach, Anime Videos and Episodes Free Online is also good. If you like something dark and gritty try Attack on Titan, if you are a gamer and would like an interesting anime about gaming (atleast the first season is interesting) Try Sword art online. If you want one everyone watches, that I personally don't like try bleach. Also there is one piece that one is good too, and space dandy is a pretty satirical anime but it's funny.

My first animes were InuYasha and Pokemon (original series).

Now I watch Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (I like the Brotherhood anime more than the first one, but that's just me), and YuGiOh (mostly the abridged series, nowadays).

I used to watch Ranma 1/2 a lot. I finished the Lucky Star series, it's good if you're into moe anime with no plot.

I recently started watching Blue Exorcist and it's not too shabby. Space Dandy is pretty good.

Panty&Stocking w/Garterbelt is AWESOME but it's a bit NSFW. I'm on the last episode now. :icon_bigg

My FIRST anime was Fruits Basket. Then, I moved along to Inuyasha and Fairy Tail. I then moved onto things like Naruto, Death Note, Eden of the East, Sword Art Online, Mushi-shi, Wolf and Spice, Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, Kino's Journey, in which I ventured into darker things like Attack On Titan. All of these things I'd recommend. Also, above all, I love anime movies. Check out all of Studio Ghibli's stuff, for sure.

my friend shared this link with me a while back: 48 anime films you should see before you die - Imgur
There are a lot of famous anime series but many of them are rather crappy and suffer from a lack of ambition.

I won't link to any sites directly, but Kiss Anime is where I watch anime.

If you're not looking for fantasy themes, try starting out with the Grave of the Fireflies, which is a war film about two orphaned children's struggle for existence. For anime series, I suggest checking out Planetes, which is about a space station crew who collect space debris. Aku no Hana is a psychological school drama about a kid who is extorted into a sadistic "friendship" for stealing a classmate's gymwear. Sounds rather Japanese but its style is one-of-a-kind and the pacing is interesting as well.

If you're into sci-fi, definitely check out Cowboy Bebop. I haven't watched it yet and I feel really bad, it's hailed as a classic. Space Dandy is another interesting title.

If you don't mind fantasy though, the best anime to start with is Hayao Miyazaki's production. Animation is top-notch, the stories are good and they are good, light films albeit with serious themes; many of his films are classics in Japanese animation. Spirited Away is probably the smartest one to watch first, it's an easy on the eyes and the mind. Porco Rosso and Princess Mononoke are awesome too. If you like his films, you can check out My Neighbour Totoro, which I think offers very little to adult audiences except nostalgia, and Only Yesterday, which is a rather unique drama, but worth it I think.

    Satoshi Kon's films are brilliant and a good "next move". They have a darker tone and they often blur the line between reality and illusion. Tokyo Godfathers is Kon's most accessible film, and it's a delightful mix of light-hearted fun and serious themes such as poverty. Paprika is an incredibly beautifully animated film and one of my favourite films of all time. Perfect Blue is a good mystery film too. Satoshi Kon is my favourite animator/director, too bad he died at such a young age ;__;

Ghost in the Shell and Ghost in the Shell 2.0: Innocence have beautiful animation too and they are rather thought-provoking. Might want to check out Mamoru Oshii's other work as well, such as Memories or Patlabor.

I don't recommend watching Naruto, Bleach and the like unless you reeally want to spend upwards of 100 hours qlued to the screen, hooked on something you know really isn't that good. :grin:DD If you do check those though, be sure to also try Kill La Kill. It's an anime that satirises many genre cliches of anime, such as the magical girl subgenre of anime geared towards girls. It also carries a feminist vibe I guess, even though it's packed with panty-shots.
Death Note and Paranoia Agent are some anime series I'd suggest watching. Death Note is a really popular title and for good reason. I always liken it to Breaking Bad; both have a protagonist who starts out as "good" but descends to a path of crime, and you know from the start that neither is going to end well. Paranoia Agent is a 13-episode psychological series by Satoshi Kon. His trademark merging of reality and illusion takes a darker turn here.

    tl;dr:
Grave of the Fireflies, Planetes, Aku No Hana
    Cowboy Bebop, Space Dandy
Spirited Away, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbour Totoro.
Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika, Perfect Blue, Paranoia Agent.
Ghost in the Shell, Ghost in the Shell 2.0:Innocence.
    Memories, Patlabor.
    Death Note, Kill la Kill

edit OMG this is probably the longest post I've ever written

  9. Well I have seen Most of Dragonball Z, First three seasons of Bleach, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, Spice and Wolf, My Neighbor Totoro, and that's all I can remember. I thought it'd be fun to try something new because I haven't seen other anime stuff besides what I listed.

I'm usually into Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Adventure, an Space type of stuff. I occasionally like dark and gritty, Horror, but only in small doses. I've been interested in some Comedy recently.

Fate/Zero is a really good show that hasn't been mentioned yet. Also Code Geass and Guilty Crown are good too. Noein is a lesser known one that I enjoyed, but it's a bit of a hit or miss show I hear.

Morphim's recommendations are spot-on! Now I don't really have to elaborate :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:. But would certainly recommend Cowboy Bebop, Satoshi Kon's films, as well as Studio Ghibli.

Adding onto those suggestions, I'd also recommend Samurai Champloo, Higashi no Eden, Neon Genesis Evangelion (mecha, deals with a surplus of psychological themes, mainly pertaining to individual characters), Gurren Lagann (sci-fi/mecha, likely one of the most highly regarded animes out there), Shingeki no Kyojin, and after seeing this one recently, Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet (sci-fi themed; short series, but entertaining).

I find the lack of High School of the Dead to be disturbing...

My first, and favorite to-date, series was Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Definitely recommend it to anyone interested in anime. It's a dark, psychological take on magical girl shows like Sailor Moon.

I also recommend both versions of Fullmetal Alchemist. (I prefer the 2003 version, but it's all about personal taste.) Usually people who like one also enjoy the other, so it's worth watching both.

Finally, one that I recommend to fellow LBGTQ folk is Hourou Musuko, or Wandering Son. It's about a group of middle schoolers discovering and coming to terms with their identities. It's also one of the best slice-of-life series I've seen.

Once you're acclimated to the medium a bit (or right away, if you're so inclined), definitely check out Revolutionary Girl Utena and Neon Genesis Evangelion. Both are classics that greatly influenced later anime.

^I've read some of the Wandering Son manga.

Currently, my website of choice is Daisuki.
Hardly any ads, and it's legal! Unfortunately, it's pretty new, so there aren't very many anime series on the site yet.

If you want some reccomendations, I like Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Nichijou, and Daily Lives of High School Boys. Generally, I read the manga first, but I've noticed that most "scanlations" aren't so great.

I don't really want to reccomend what has been reccomended already, though.

By the way, you should probably tell us what genre of entertainment you like.
That way, we can make better reccomendations.

Hellsing Ultimate (Gore Gallore), Elfen Lied (Softcore pornographic at times(annoyingly) but a lot of gore). Those are the two I like the most. And Bleach (No gore. But still blood. Somehow ghosts bleed in anime)
