I like Drowning Pool, Rage Against The Machine, Voltaire (more dark cabaret/goth but whatever) Disturbed, Godsmack (vaguely alternative) Metallica, though not my favorite, Alice in chains, and probably a million others that I can't think of right now.
So what's your favorites, my.. Alternative... People?

And goths/punks get extra hugs!! (*hug*)

I tend to think of 'alternative' as a description of the sound, rather than the relative popularity of, a band.

My favourite alternative rock bands would be Sonic Youth, Pavement, Pixies, Guided By Voices, The Replacements, My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Galaxie 500, Jesus and Mary Chain stuff like this.

    I guess I'm somewhat goth.
I can't wear makeup, but I like to wear black clothes sometimes.

I used to dye my hair black, but my mom made me go back to my natural hair color. She said I looked like a 'freaky goth chick.'

My natural hair color is chestnut brown and it has a redish tint (especially when it's in the sunlight), so guess it still looks kinda cool...

A lot of 90s stuff, some more pop-rock and some more alt-rock.

Third Eye Blind (should be obvious from my username), Social Distortion, Gin Blossoms, Better than Ezra, Stone Temple Pilots, Candlebox, Our Lady Peace, Collective Soul, Live, Less Than Jake, Green Day (pre-American Idiot), Days of the New, Trapt, OAR, Buckcherry, Spin Doctors.

And a bunch of one-hit wonders and other obscure crap...hit me up for recommendations if you like. I'm happy to spread the gospel of 90s music!

I wouldn't consider any of the bands mentioned alternative. They're mainstream.

*Giddy voice* I spy a fellow My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Pavement and Sonic Youth fan! You are one awesome human being

Apart from the ones I've already mentioned I also like: Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh, Tame Impala, Mission of Burma and LSD and the Search for God.

Alternative Rock is a genre though, it's a description of how something sounds rather than of how 'mainstream' it is. You could call REM or Nirvana alternative rock despite them being huge bands, for example. I'm not sure if posting about the genre Alternative Rock was what the OP intended but still, I think using the term to describe how obscure music is is completely pointless.

Besides, several bands mentioned are definitely not 'mainstream' by any definition.

Haha, thanks. Yeah I listened to Dinosaur Jr after you posted about them in another thread and liked them a lot, might listen to some of the others you just mentioned, don't know any besides Tame Impala.

Galaxie 500 sound quite like Slowdive but I prefer them by a fair bit, so you might like.

I love Three Days Grace, but I've only listened to Adam as the lead singer... I'm ignoring the new guy...
Evanescence is pretty cool, but some songs are really depressing. I'm sorry, but I like to either giggle, scream, or laugh manically at my music.
I've only heard two KoRn songs, and they are a little weird. But hey, I'm weird, it works
