Probably like personal favorite historical figures or heroes, gay icons change from person to person. Celebrities who are out spoken about LGBT people or feature them so often in their works might be considered one of the top gay icons... like Lady Gaga. Or indivudals loved mostly by gay men like Bette Midler, Kylie Minogue, Liza Minelli, Barbra Streisand. My top 5 gay icons are: - Russell Tovey - Geoff Johns - Madonna - Tori Amos - Clive Barker Clive Barker and Geoff Johns there as they are one of the top dogs in their business when their chosen field dominated and mastered by straight white males and both generally considered to marketing for straight white males as well. Tori and Madonna while gay friendly musicians also they are artists without predujices and helped me great deal to accept myself and people as they are. Lastly Talented Mr. Tovey... That quote is the reason why he is on top of my list.

This is something I never really understood. What is it that some gay men idolize in these people (usually all of whom are straight female singers)? I certainly have a few personal idols, but I don't really the get the "gay icon" thing.

My top 5 -Ellen Degeneres for obvious reasons -Christina Aguilera, I don't get why Britney is considered a gay icon when Xtina featured the first gay couple in a music video (I believe) and supported gay rights when it was still a very taboo subject. Her whole Stripped album is very empowering. -Lady Gaga, again she's an obvious one, she's a huge supporter -Mark Tewksbury, not a lot of people know about him but he's a pretty amazing gay Olympic athlete, who has done quite a bit for the gay community in sports. -Michael Sam and Jason Collins, having out athletes in such homophobic sports world is huge, they're also totally breaking down stereotypes.
