HTTYD is one of my favorite franchises, and I'm super excited for the sequel coming out in June. The line where the character "comes out" is pretty subtle and Dean DeBlois, the writer and director, has confirmed that it meant the character is gay.

Read about it here: Cannes 2014: How to Train Your Dragon Character Comes Out as Gay

I'm super happy to see LGBT characters in animated movies, being an animator myself. Sadly the comments on the article are for the most part hateful, much like how people lashed out at the jock from Paranorman mentioning he has a boyfriend.

Why the fuck did I think reading the comments on that article would be a good idea?

    I like this news.

I dislike the comments though. I have to laugh that people think that one gay character shoves homosexuality down their throats (As if LGBT people aren't sick of heterosexuals doing the same thing) and that people are complaining about sex?! WTF?! The line is going to be extremely subtle and kids won't even catch on that he's gay to begin with.

I fuckin love HTTYD so I find this to be pretty interesting

I just hope my mom doesn't find out about this because then she probably won't let me see HTTYD2 when it comes out

I've never seen HTTYD and had no interest in seeing the sequel, but I may go see it just because of this.

  9. Yeah, that's great and everything, but I wish people would have OBVIOUS gay characters.

Like not just subtext, admitting later that it was kind of a gay thing...I won't be happy until it's as obvious that a character is gay as it is that most characters are straight.

That's true. Hopefully in my lifetime it'll happen. There's sometimes still trouble with non-white people getting represented in media.

I love HTTYD and have read the entire series it is (loosely) based off of, but this makes me think of Paranorman again. I love when movies do stuff like this. The comments are stupid, though.

Tell me about it. If I hear the line "shoving it in people's faces" one more time. If you were an alien you'd think gay people must go round grinding on straight people whenever they are caught unaware.

In terms of the story. Good. Although I would have liked them to be a bit more brave and had the main character, Hiccup as gay rather than a comedy sidekick or supporting character. Still, little steps.

Hiccup as gay would've been cool, but I do like him and Astrid, so...

And yeah, "shoving it in people's faces," "gay agenda," "gay lifestyle," and "I'm not a homophobe, but..." drive me nuts. I thought it was an exaggeration when people said bigots liked to say those things, but no, it's said too much.

Well at least Hiccup and Astrid are good for encouraging a bit of diversity. Hiccup for being a male pacifist and sticking to his beliefs, and Astrid for being a "tomboy" (or rather just a strong female).

He subtly comes out in a way that 100% of kids wont understand and I bet at least 40% of adults won't get either, yet he is somehow corrupting young children's minds with his sexual perversion and deviancy and he's obviously forcing his sexuality down everyone's throats :icon_roll
