I have no idea what to expect.

I think im going to have to do some research whilst its installing

    Oh.
And does anyone know any open source programs?

You're probably trying it through Wubi. It won't deliver full performance and it might have extra problems with drivers, be warned. Partitioning is always convenient.

I use Ubuntu 8.04 (heavily customized), there are pictures in my galleries.

And you can't tell me you haven't heard of Firefox...

aha managed to change it now.

I think im just going to find a guide or something to do a partition.

I might find my old XP laptop and do a partition on that.
Or i might just wipe it clean and stick ubuntu on it.

Granted i have no idea how.

Be grateful if anyone could tell me how

    aha.

okay so what if ive posted 3 times...

    Linux scares me:tears:

Its as evil as him >

I was updating loads of things apparently and there was like a 101 things to update...
    so i did.

    Then is just crashed.
I waited for like 15 minutes then i just turn the bastard off.

then i log back onto and no program would open properly :|:|:|:dry:

Then i noticed the volume was turned off so i tried to turn it on.
The the crazy thing starts blabbering about GStreamer or some shit.

then it said go update some more stuff.
Then it starts shouting at me again saying i have to do something manually :tears:

Im glad im back on my vista

Linux scares the shite out of me:icon_sad:

Linux really isn't as scary as it might seem at first. First off, it's generally a bad idea to do blind updates like that. Unless something is marked as critical, it's generally best to only update if that update solves a problem you're having. Otherwise, stick with "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." And linux isn't for everybody. But if you ever want to try linux again, might I suggest Mint? I've had nothing but pleasant experiences with Mint.

My current laptop's running ubuntu 8.10, and I've loved it. As Fred said, I would really recommend partitioning your hard drive and installing it properly. If you can get your hands on a program called partition magic, it's a breeze. It might be a little scary at first, and chances are that something isn't going to work right off the bat, but there's a lot of really, really good support from the community (particularly, check out ubuntuforums).

If he's on vista he can use its Disk Management application to resize the Windows partition... he doesn't need PartitionMagic (which by the way has serious compatibility issues with vista - it won't run on any computer with vista, and with that I mean any computer with a vista NTFS partition)

yeah fred you're right vitsa can partition the harddrive itself.

I'm actually installing ubuntu as I type this on my iPod.

Apparently then only thing i have to do is mess around with the bootloader so vista is the default OS

    Or something like that

The second Vista is probably a manufacturer installed backup partition. My old desktop had the same thing.

My laptop which was completely knackered due to lack of memory recently decided to corupt all of its data.

I was going to install mint as you suggested but i alreaddy had the ubuntu bootable CD from my vista PC.

So now i have a dual bootable vista/ubuntu desktop
    and a ubuntu laptop.

    aha
I was going to delete the ubuntu on the pc
but itll be alright for when i just need to use the internet and nothing fancy
