I'm listening to the Goldfinger version of 99 Red Balloons and it made me think of this question. I like it better than the original.

    Johnny Cash's "Hurt".

It's a cover of Nine Inch Nail's "Hurt".

The Beatles version of Twist and Shout
The Clash's version of I Fought the Law
There's probably a few more I like that I can't think of right now, but those are the two that immediately come to mind

Guns N' Roses~ Knockin' on Heaven's Door and Sympathy for the Devil. Really they're the only ones that immediately come to mind in terms of covers being better than the original.

That and most of the songs in Across the Universe. They managed to both keep the feel of the Beatles and modernize the sound at the same time. It really was a remarkable movie, I dare say an instant classic.

Or more relevant to LGBT issues, Prudence's first appearance:

Tori Amos version of '97 Bonnie and Clyde (Orginal by Eminem). Tori make that song a creepy masterpiece.

Also Real Men (Joe Jackson) makes me emotional everytime. I love how Tori makes love with piano and notes.

I love both Kate Bush and Within Temptation version of "Running up that Hill".

Hurt by Johnny cash is far superior to the original nine inch nails song but that's the only one I can think of

Personal Jesus-Marylin Manson (IDK who did the original.)
I don't know why, but that song makes me SO horny.
Maybe it's because Marylin Manson is sexy as hell.

I like remake songs that make it completely different than the original (after all, that's the point of making a cover anyway)
I do agree that Johnny Cash made Hurt his song and I read in an article where Trent Reznor even said that it wasn't his song anymore which is pretty remarkable.
I also think Nina Simone's "Feeling Good" is a lot better than the Broadway original. She sang it with so much passion and conviction.
    Sinead O' Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U" (Prince Original)
Ben Folds' "Bitches Ain't Shit" (Dr. Dre Original)

Depeche Mode. But I disagree that Marilyn's version is better:stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Michael Jackson's version of Come Together is better than the original in my opinion

There are some versions of songs which I like that are almost as good as the orignial ones (or even better in some cases):

    · 10,000 Maniacs' "Because the Night" cover (original version by Patti Smith).

    · Carola's "Woman in Love" cover (original version by Barbra Streisand).

    · Celtic Woman's "Orinoco Flow" cover (original version by Enya).

    · Ruth Lorenzo's "Always" cover (original version by Bon Jovi).

    · Eli Lieb's "Born to Die" cover (original version by Lana del Rey).

    · The Corrs' "Old Town" cover (original version by Philip Lynott). In this case I prefer The Corrs' version.

    · The Corrs and Bono's "When the Stars Go Blue" cover (original version by Ryan Adams). I prefer the cover too.

    · Katerine Avgoustakis' "Ayo Technology" cover and Milow's "Ayo Technology" cover (original version by 50 Cent). Both are much better than the original one, in my opinion.

    · Girls Aloud's "I'll Stand by You" cover (original version by The Pretenders).

    · Ella Fitzgerald's "Got to Get you into my Life" cover (original version by The Beatles). I prefer Ella Fitzgerald's version.

    · Hermes House Band's "The Rhythm of the Night" cover (original version by Corona).

    On that I agree.

Also another cover I like. I never liked Guns 'n' Roses but loved this song from Sheryl.

The original was by Depache Mode.
I think I actually like Johnny Cash's version of Personal Jesus even more than Marylin Manson's.

I remember hearing Joe Cocker's little help from my friends before the original Beatles version. And I think I still like it a little better. Sorry Ringo.

Definitely Mad World by Gary Jules is better than the original Tears for Fears version.

    --Edit--

    Recommend looking them up though.
