I know I've met a few members and now I've met a few more who are fans of magic the gathering, so I figure I'll start a dedicated thread about it.

I used to play it back in 94 to 97 but then quit for... Not having time or friends who played it in high school.

I got back into the game around the end of the Zendikar block when my friend who had cancer got bored and wanted something to do.

Now I play it a lot.

To start off the conversation I'll address standard format. (I'll talk modern or edh too but I don't generally do legacy).

I've given up on multicolor decks because of rotation and money invested. My mono red inn/RTR standard deck wiped the floor, and even took out a Bant midrange with thragtusk and restoration angels galore.

I'm a mono red player in standard. It always works and is budget. I'm trying a mono blue devotion right now that's different from the current builds. It's based around daring thief and perplexing chimera. Steal lots of stuff.

So talk to me about whatever, I'll talk about modern and edh later.

For standard I play a Blue/Green deck. It's not very focused, I quickly built it when at my local card shop whilst waiting for my friends to arrive. I do quite like the mix of control spells and large monsters. Paralyze and then kill. Sort of like a snake or a scorpion
I tried mono-red but I felt it was a bit to varied in results. I.e. sometimes my rush tactic would get me a quick win, but other times I would just end up screwing up and having no cards to play later on. I think I needed a few more mountains in that deck though.

    Primarily play modern though.

    The thing with red?

If you don't have draw and filter like Magma Jet, Faith less looting or the new chandra you can run out of steam.

Now what red thrives on is recursion through stuff like chandras Phoenix and mana sinks like the recent dragons mantle or old goodies like stonewright. Mana sinks are soooo incredibly important for mono red when cards run out.

I didn't have cards but I had plays from mana sinks so it's a form of red card advantage.

    As far as modern?

I have a nice kikki pod.

I say I play primarily modern because I think my Black/White lifegain deck would be ruined if I had to get rid of all my cards below the RtR block. I mean, I wouldn't have Divinity of Pride, so I wouldn't have a focus on the deck, and I would have to remove most of my Innistrad block cards which form the core of the deck. Most of my cards with lifelink and lifegain effects are from the Innistrad block and soon I'll have to remove my M14 cards like Sanguine Bond and Cloudshift, which when paired with a card such as Trading Post or Elspeth to get a ridiculous number of tokens out and then a congregate or goldnight redeemer which can then be cloudshifted for double the damage and lifegain.
With a lot of life I can deal 16 damage with Divinity of pride and Sanguine Bond.
That's why I love my deck

I have an idea what your deck is. How many lands and how many dual land types you have?

I have a blue black control ninja deck. It uses graveyard and ninjustu as card advantage. I don't really enjoy spending tons of money just on a mana base.

I have like 2 dual lands in it. I'm not sure how many lands I have, I can't be bothered counting but it's between 24 and 30. I really want to make a black-red vampire deck with Vampire Nocturnus, which I am currently using in my black/white deck and I also want to make a black-blue zombie deck. I have a few cards for returning zombie cards from the graveyards.

Don't put too much lands in. Even mana intensive decks only need at most 25 lands.

I'll have to count to make sure, though it seems like I have a decent balance when playing, unless I shuffled badly and end up drawing no land, then loads of land.

I'm looking to get more cards so that I can build a mono-red Goblin commander deck, with Krenko as the commander.

ha my friends used to play magic when I was younger, it was actually a fun game. Though it's super nerdy.

I think the majority of people would actually enjoy playing it if they bothered to learn it. So strategic with millions of different outcomes.
