So apparently Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind is about crystal meth...

I just learned that today. Freaked me out since it sounds so happy and upbeat, but it holds a pretty dark story. I guess I never really listened to the lyrics very closely. Doesn't help that he sings so fast either haha.

    Lyric video.

Do you know any upbeat, "happy" songs that have dark meanings? Other than Ring around the Rosie.

umm.. I dont know if this exactly counts, considering the song lyrics are so obviously meaning the dark meaning, but the beat of the song and the music just throws you off cause its happy sounding. Its a super upbeat sounding song but its so depressing ;~; yet.. a song i quite like..

But its bullet by hollywood undead

Yes, I hear that song everyday at work. I have a good friend at work that was in her twenties during the 90's, and she says Crystal Meth was a club drug back then. It wasn't what it is now, sort of like crack was kinda of a club drug in the 80's.

I always sing the line doing crystal meth until you break as doing crystal meth until break just for shit. Don't like the song, but it's definitely not as clean or relatable to people as they think. It's a very esoteric song.

A lot of people who were partying in the 90's did Crystal Meth.

I'm dying to see semicharmedlife's reaction to this thread

Brown Sugar sounds pretty happy, but it's about rape.

And one of my favourites: No Rain. It's so dang catchy and upbeat, but it's about depression.

Haha I totally forgot there was a user with that name. That's funny. Who are the artists of those songs you mentioned?

Oh wait I know No Rain. Oh my god, it really is sad now that I read the lyrics.

    Everclear - "Wonderful"
It sounds upbeat, but if you take a moment to look at the lyrics, you'll see it is anything but.

    The Smiths - "Unhappy Birthday"
    Those lyrics...

    Sublime - "Santeria"
Most people think this song is happy, but do a little digging, and it tells an interesting story.

    Pearl Jam - "Last Kiss"
You can probably tell, by that title, where this is going...

    Bobby Darin - "Artificial Flowers"
This song. This song... wow. It sounds so jazzy and happy, but... those lyrics...

Dead or Alive - "You Spin Me Right Round"
It's supposed to be about a rapist. Yeah, can't really elaborate on that.

    Prozzak - "Monday Morning"
The voice makes me want to laugh, but then you see the lyrics and, you feel bad for wanting to laugh.

I was actually thinking about this earlier when listening to some Supertramp, because, to me, "It's Raining Again" sounds relatively upbeat but from the lyrics it's about having a liver die I think. Correct me if I'm wrong.

    Grimes - Oblivion

Apparently, this song is about being assaulted, written from her own expiriences. I did not see that coming.

My favorite band, They Might Be Giants, have many a song of this nature.

    There is:

    When Will You Die
    The Bells Are Ringing
    I Palindrome I

    ...just to name a few.
