I previously made a post about anime suggestions, but here's another one.

I really like depressing, heartbreaking, or generally sad movies/shows. Or, shows that have a damaged character in them. I'm not a sap and I hate overdramatized soap-operas so not that.

But when anime and sadness come together it is beautiful.

Recently, I saw a movie called "Five Centimeters Per Second" and while the writing was a bit rough/emo (though that may be due to the language barrier with me watching the English dub version). In retrospect the movie was really moving and I appreciate it a lot.

If anyone knows of sad anime, please do say. I'll take any suggestions. Or if you can even think of any "normal" movies that fit this description feel free to list those too.

Thanks,
-Rhys-

Berserk.

Everybody dies, is tortured, or violated by demons. The few who survive, are too damaged and traumatized to do much but suffer. However, every now and then, there can be heart-warming moments.

It's not sad in the conventional way, it's sad more so in the way of 'this world is fucking depressing and morbid, is there any point to living'?

If mature, tragic, complex stories and Characters mixed with supernatural action/adventure are for you then I reccommend to you fate/zero, also Death Note if you haven't seen it yet

Anohana (couldn't have spelled that right) is the saddest anime series I've ever watched

Anime that are super sad and will make you bawl because the producers are actually TARGETING YOUR FEELS feels = bawling like a baby
Clannad After Story (feels x2)
Ano hana (feels x1)
Ano Hana movie (feels x1)
Angel Beats (feels x3)
Little Busters Refrain (feels x3)
Black Bullet (feels x2)
Grave of Fireflies (feels x2)
Hybrid Child (feels x1)
Summer Wars (feels x1 but not too heavy)
Plastic Memories (feels x1)

Anime that are good at making you cry only after you develop an attachment to the character
Naruto (feels x2 more for some)
One Piece + special (feels x3 more for some)
Sword Art Online II (feels x1 more for some)
Cardfight Vanguard ( feels x1 I am probably the only one though but the others are legit)
Fairy Tail 2/2014 (feels x1 more for some)

Special Notes
Hybrid Child is gay themed and feels hit with third couple
I haven't finished Plastic memories yet and it is still airing so it could be sadder. It is the only anime though that made me cry episode 1. That was insanely upsetting XD

ENJOY CRYING :lol::icon_bigg:eusa_danc:icon_wink:slight_smile:

Clannad and Clannad After Story made me cry so much.

Watch Clannad first, then Clannad After Story. It was the best love story I've ever watched. It was the only anime that managed to make me cry for so long after finishing.

Has seriously no one said Attack on Titan yet
its not exactly heartbreaking, but it deals with heavy emotional themes so

Also, I second fate/zero

I can't recommend One Piece as a show because it's too long, but I've never cried more during an anime than that series. I still get chills and a lump in my throat listening to the music from the last scenes of CP9. That definitely broke my heart, like Eye Shine said, because you get attached to the characters so you're going to feel what they feel.

Paranoia Agent. I cannot stress this enough. Even the couple filler episodes it has are really high-quality.

This is a clip from ep. 1, no real spoilers.

How has nobody said Elfen Lied yet? The final episodes of that anime was figuratively like being mounted by feels before being repeatedly punched in the face by it.

5 cm per second is a beautiful movie. T o T

From the top of my head, Attack on Titan and Claymore. For a sad anime movie, watch Wolf Children.

One Piece, for sure. Scumbag Oda-sensei ;-; I also really like Death Note for moral ambiguity but it's not very feel-y imo.

I think my personal favourite is X/1999 for feels. Especially episode 16 ("Slaughter"), which has one of the... worst/best feckin' cliffhanger-y ends to a character ever.

If you haven't seen it, Wolfs Rain is heartbreaking. Especially the last couple of episodes.

Why has nobody mentioned Wolf's Rain yet?

And I second Grave of the Fireflies, Shinsekai Yori, fate/zero, Clannad.

Grave of the Fireflies, Clannad, Clannad After Story and Angel Beats are all particularly sad.
Attack on Titan also has very sad parts but it is a bit violent and the sad parts aren't moving more shocking. I love it but it would depend on whether its your kind of thing.

Clannad + After Story definitely top of the list.
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica gets pretty dark/sad at points.
Wolf Children: Ame and Yuki isn't *sad* but it is very feels-y and may make some people cry.
