    Hey everyone,

I just started watching 'Avatar: The Last Airbender', and I texted my friend telling him 'I've started watching anime. Please help.' (I used to hate anime but if Avatar is then I no longer do) and he says 'Avatar isn't anime'.

Is it anime? I've just finished ep. 5 now.

I don't think it is? I'm not an expert. I can see why it could be a question since it's clearly heavily inspired by anime.

Also yay, Avatar! What a good show.

No it isn't. It was made in the USA.
However - in Japan it would be classified as anime because it is animation.

But it doesn't really matter. I'm an anime otaku who LOVES Avatar and the Legend of Korra.

Isn't it just the Japanese word for cartoons? They'd call Spongebob an anime. There's no need for it to be in its own category except for ease of identifying the particular style that's dug out a niche for itself.

Avatar's pretty iffy on that line; really could go either way. If you say "I like anime" then Avatar, while a phenomenal show, is not really the most accurate representative of it as a whole.

I know people who would lynch me if I called anime cartoons. I still haven't managed to get out of them what the difference is, other than "it's just different".

I think it has to be made in Japan to be considered anime, but it definitely takes influences from anime. Great show, btw.

Well those people must love their feeling of superiority over live-action and any animation that isn't distinctly Japanese.

Anime is a term which roughly means 'animated', we have just grown to associate the term with just one section of animation - Japanese anime.

So in conclusion, Avatar is animated so you could call it Anime if you so pleased.

It's the closest thing that the west has produced to anime, but in my opinion, it isn't, it's a cartoon, because it's american.

It's still an amazing series and I've watched it twice, and there has only been one other show I've watched, Tokyo Ghoul, and I'm rewatching Gintama at the moment, so that means that I regard it very, very highly. It's good. Keep watching it. Then watch legend of korra. I don't think it's as good, but it's still pretty good, and goes on for longer.

    Thanks everyone!

I think I'll just call it anime for ease. Does anyone know of any good anime(s) that I could watch after I finish?

    Gracias.

Well, the obvious choice would be Legend of Korra, wouldn't it?

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is amazing and kinda similar to Avatar in terms of them both being adventurous journeys surrounded by a larger war.
