A terrific book written by a German pre-World War II. I read it years ago, long before I had an inkling that I wasn't straight. There are beautiful complex characters and Hesse touches on the subjects of love, sex homosexuality, racism, religion, art, violence. The story easily stands on its own but when you consider when Hesse wrote it and what was happening in the world and his country I think this book was far far ahead of its time. Anyone else read it? Narcissus and Goldmund
That sounds interesting. I haven't read much of any German literature, aside from some of the poetry that's been used in classical music. I'll try to remember to look for it whenever I'm in a town with a better library.
