Hello, When writing, would you do flashbacks chronologically backwards [see 1] or go the the last point and work forwards [see 2]? i.e. [1]Present Past 2014 Past 2010 Past 2006 OR [2] Present Past 2006 Past 2010 Past 2014 Hope you can understand what I'm trying to ask. Thank-you.
I think it depends on what is happening *in* the flashbacks. If you're planning on using them to reveal something, then I'd put the least important flashback first, building up to the most important one so that you're slowly revealing it, you see? However, as a rule of thumb, I'd use the second set that you outlined. Hope this helps! ---------- Post added 29th May 2016 at 03:39 AM ---------- EDIT: I actually use this free writing site, that I'll link below. It's really helpful and full of professional writers as well as amateur writers. Just a suggestion, but I've found it pretty helpful for my writing needs: Writing group and online writing workshop for serious writers | Scribophile
I usually go for [2], but I think that's mainly because when I use flashbacks in writing, up to this point it has been to show a back story and progression of a character - and in that case I find it easier to go with [2]. I think it depends on context, really. In another type of story I might go with [1].
