Terrible emotional pain? Some websites claim the lyrics go "these memories are nothing to me, just salt in the wound" I've never heard the song in my life (so I don't know for certain what lyrics they actually sing)
If you put salt on a cut it doesn't really do anything in the way of healing, but it hurts like shit. You know the saying "putting salt on an open wound".
