Musicals!

Discussion in 'Entertainment and Technology' started by AlexPatrickMorrissey, May 15, 2009.

  1. Ahh, I love film musicals so much! Nothing cheers me up like them (or in Dancer in the Dark's case, makes me feel like crap). I'll never get enough of them! What are your favorite film musicals and songs from them?

    - West Side Story (Somewhere)
    - Singin' in the Rain (Good Mornin')
    - Chicago (All That Jazz)
    - The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Sweet Transvestite)
    - The Wizard of Oz (Over the Rainbow)
    - Moulin Rouge! (Come What May)
    - Dancer in the Dark (I've Seen It All)
    (!)

I love musicals! One of the many stereotypically gay part of me :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:
I watched Rocky Horror Picture Show a few days ago and thought the songs were really awesome!
Hedwig and the Angry Inch was awesome too

  3. I've wanted to see Hedwig for some time now. Is it really good? It sounds so interesting.

Mama is going to rant now:

Gosh I HATE Andrew Lloyd Webber!
His musicals are gaudy, garish, tawdry, kitsch and pretentious!
He's the musical version of costume jewellery!

    Good: Evita
Meh: Phantom of the opera, Sunset Boulevard
Bad: Jesus Christ Superstar, Cats, Starlight Express
Worst: Joseph and the technicolour Dreamcoat.

    ARGH!
    Sondheim is so much better.

@ Mama: Sondheim FTW!!! I mean everything he touches turns to pure gold.

Umm, I don't really know if anything hasn't been said at some point, but here they are:

Rent - Umm, all of it Haha. Probably Out Tonight/Another Day though
Chicago - When You're Good to Mama and Cell Block Tango
Hairspray - Welcome to the 60's and Without Love

Gosh, for how much I love musicals, I haven't actually seen that many on stage or in movie form. I just get the soundtracks from the library and then wish that I could see them on stage. Which reminds me, I heard that they were going to turn In the Heights into a movie. I don't know if it's true or not, but if it is, I hope they do a good job. And I know that this is getting off topic, but has anyone heard of Next to Normal? It's up for a bunch of Tony Awards this year. I've only heard two of the songs, but what I've heard I love. Sorry for getting off topic.:icon_wink

I never thought of myself as much of a musical fan, but looking back at how many I watch...wow...

Sweeney Todd: Worst Pies in London, A Little Priest
Rocky Horror Picture Show: Time Warp, Sweet Transvestite
Little Shop of Horrors: Dentist!, Mean Green Mother
A Funny Thing Happened: Comedy Tonight
Hairspray: You Can't Stop the Beat

I've seen a lot more, but I like some better than others.

I am mildly obsessive over all the musicals by Jason Robert Brown (especially Parade and The Last 5 Years). Gaaah, so good!! But in terms of a list:

The Last 5 Years - Any of the songs really, especially The Next Ten Minutes, If I Didn't Believe in You, I Can Do Better Than That
Parade - It's Hard to Speak My Heart, Finale, All the Wasted Time, This Is Not Over Yet
The Colour Purple - I'm Here
Spring Awakening - Totally F'd, All That's Known
Tick Tick Boom (I'm off to see it in London tomorrow!) - Come to your senses
    RENT - any song
Les Misérables - I Dreamed a Dream, On My Own
Songs for a New World - I'm Not Afraid of Anything, Stars and the Moon

I think that's enough for now

My current dream role is Albin in La Cage Aux Folles. It mixes musical theatre and drag. I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!

Rent - all of the songs are fantastic, but I particularly enjoy What You Own, Halloween, Goodbye Love, and Tango: Maureen.
Rocky Horror Picture Show - Science Fiction Double Feature, Time Warp, Hot Patootie, Sweet Transvestite
CURTAINS! - Thataway!, Show People, He Did It, The Woman's Dead

I'm so happy someone else appreciates Curtains! My old High School actually put on a performance of Curtains!, which was really good. I was really pleased with how well it turned out. I also really like the song It's a Business.

I'd switch Meh to Good, vise versa. My opinion, of course, but I thought Sunset and Phantom were FANTASTIC!

I agree with the others, though.
