I don't understand why people hate them so much.

In my opinion, they're one of the best forms of entertainment! I know some people don't like the fact the story is interupted by song, or that the entire show on few occasions (Like Phantom of the Opera) are sung almost entirely.

But why the stereotype? Why do people think your lame and whatnot if you like a musical?

    I loved:
    Hairspray
    Chicago
    The Sound of Music
    Phantom of the Opera
    Moulin Rouge!
    West Side Story

Heck, I enjoyed HSM 1 and 3 (2, no, just no).

So what do you think? What's the reason people think they are lame in the first place?

    ...people think Musicals are LAME?!?!

I want to find these people and smack them. I make sure to screen my friends on there views on musicals before i solidify a friendship with them. Its just something they are going to be forced to watch - alot.

50% or more of the movies i watch are musicals! I own many on DVD and i re-watch them monthly! My favorite are the ones with the least talking. I like musicals because it is my two favorite things: Story telling AND music. I love how the songs tell the story. It makes it easier for me to understand the plot and keeps me WAY more entertained that a normal movie or play would.

I guess most people reading this know im a huge musical buff already, but in case you didnt pick up on that yet there it is haha.

My list of musicals i own:

    - Rent
    - Rent (filmed live)
    - Across the Universe
    - Chicago
    - Grease
    - Grease 2
    - Sound of Music
    - Phantom of the Opera
    - Little shop of Horrors
    - West Side Story
    - Mamma Mia
    - Moulin Rouge
    - Reefer Madness
    - Candide
    - Legally Blonde the Musical
    - Were the World Mine
    - Rocky Horror Picture Show
    - Hairspray
    - Fiddler on the Roof
    - The Producers
    - Sweeny Todd
    - Repo the Genetic Opera
    - Annie
    - Gigi
    - A few others im sure im forgetting

I have seen alot of other musicals live or recorded that i love but dont own as well. Spring Awakening and Les Mis are two of my favorites i dont own. Basically musicals are a way of life for me. I often find myself thinking about life in musical format. I have my entire past laid out as if it were a musical, its quite funny.

I left alot I've seen out of my list, thanks for putting more in there!
    And I know! It's crazy!

And of course they claim it's "gay" to like musicals.
    So they clearly fail.

I dont really get that either. Musicals dont seem gay to me, unless its like Rent or Rocky Horror Picture Show or something.

Guys can like music, so why is it that when that music is put into a play or movie form its "so gay"? Hmm...odd.

And for the record, i know more straight people that like musicals than gay people. Alot of people on EC tune out when i go into musical mode haha. Its not super common for gays to like musicals i find.

Well, you've found someone who loves musicals as much as you. Unless the topic is dealing with LGBT, I don't think it's in any way "gay".

Sadly I haven't seen too many musicals on stage, but I really love musicals!

I did get to see an absolutely fabulous production of 42nd Street at my University recently.

And chances are, if a song is on my iPod and it is in English, then it is either Lady Gaga or comes from a musical. I don't think they are lame, and I don't care if anyone else thinks they are.

Oh, and I missed the Tony's this year because my **** tv was not working.

I like musicals! I'm not well-versed in them, mind, but I have the following -

    The Producers
    Rocky Horror
    Phantom of the Opera
    Across the Universe
    Thoroughly Modern Millie
    The Sound of Music
    Mary Poppins (if that counts?)

... if something has Julie Andrews in it, I'll watch it. She's entirely too sweet and adorable and was way cute when she was younger, hehe. :3

As far as seeing shows live, I've seen three on Broadway:

    Phantom of the Opera (twice!)
    Les Mis (loooong, but good)
The Lion King (didn't enjoy it much)

Plus I saw Wicked in Toronto. I didn't enjoy it all that much, but I blame the person sitting beside me and an unexciting cast, and I am more than willing to see it again. I do love the music from it.

Then there are shows I haven't seen but I own the cast albums for and would love to see: Avenue Q and Children of Eden. (Children of Eden never made it to Broadway, but the music is great)

As for shows I've been in at school or the local theatre... meh. The only cast album I really ever listen to from a show that I've also been in is The Secret Garden, with the occasional foray into Nunsense.

...I don't actually own any DVD's of movie musicals.
