Do you have multiple languages installed on your computer? I have English and Russian keyboard settings, sometimes it messes up and I get cyrillic characters. (Assuming you're on Windows? If not, I have no idea.) Mine is next to my little quicklaunch taskbar on the bottom right of the screen. It says "EN" when it's on English, "RU" when it's on Russian. Otherwise, I have no idea what it might be. =X
Russian <3 as well. I actually have no idea. But I know it's happened to me on my school computer before.. hmm
IIRC Left Alt+shift will switch between installed languages, but it changes when applications change. You can change default settings too.
