Do you think that being an open gay, lesbian, or bisexual hurts a celebrity career?

It can go either way. Neil Patrick Harris doesn't seen to have had any issues with his sexuality affecting his career, actually it's quite the opposite, but as for T. R. Knight it's what lead to a lot of conflict on the Grey's Anatomy set and since he's left the show he hasn't been in anything major.

Does anyone wonder if it will hurt their career?

    It goes both ways.
But Tila Tequila's career boomed because she came out.

It depends who your working with and such, I suppose. Since Hollywood is mostly liberal, it doesn't seem to be a huge issue for alot of them. One thing people always point out is if you come out, and your a Disney Star, your career is over. Which can't really be said, I don't think a Disney star has ever come out anyways (while working in Disney).

It can go either way, just like in all of our careers. Gay men don't get cast as action heros though so if thats your thing then it will definatly hurt your career rather than help it

Coming out at the begining or early on in your carrer is (at this point) basically always going to be not-such-a-good-thing unless you have the talent of Meryl Streep or someone else super freaking awesome.

Think about all the big gay celebs...

Ellen came out after she was famous, Niel came out after he was famous, T. R came out after he was famous

...and the list goes on. Most actors who come out as gay right off the bat are typecast into gay roles or have to work twice as hard to get half as far as everyone else.

It can be done im sure, but you cant deny you will get turned down from alot of roles if you dont make a name for yourself before you come out. That being said, the more that celebs and actors DO come out, the easier it will be for everyone. We just need alot more people like Ellen on TV every day and Niel in roles of macho manly men. Thats how directors, producers, and audiences learn.

Rupert Everett is not ashamed he's gay but agrees his career suffered for coming out as he does not get leading male roles but instead "gay best friend" roles.

I don't think it necessarily hurts a career but sometimes (like mentioned in above posts) it can help the celebrity. Each case is an individual one.

I think if we're talking celebrities as in those in the entertainment industry then generally no doesnt cause any problems.

If however we are talking celebrities from, say, the sports world, well then its a different matter. I think coming out as gay if you're a sportsman would cause a huge problem for your career. I don't know about american sports, but here in the UK i can only think of one gay sportsman ive heard of,and after he came out his career went completely downhill.
