On monday i went on an adventure in downtown Ottawa all by myself. I came upon this lil record store that sold used CDs. [as well as record and cassettes and so on] I bought Everlasting by Refused and Land Of The Free? by Pennywise and a Black Flag pin. SO when i get home I pop The Refused CD into my comp, load it onto itunes and move on to the Pennywise one. It wont even load into the computer, my comp just spits it out. I tried a few times, then tried it in my CD player. 6 seconds in, it starts skipping. So I looked up how to fix scratches, and the website I found said the following: toothpaste. Basically you rub toothpaste all over the CD in a circular motion, leave it for 5 minutes, gently rinse it off with warm water and and them gently dry it with a clean towel. They did warn me that this method doesnt always work and could possibly do more harm than good but the CD wasnt working anyway, so what the hell, why not? It worked! I'm so proud of myself for fixing it with no ones help.
Gentle toothpastes are good for CDs so long as you're gentle with them. If it has a deep scratch (if you can see the scratch on both sides), it's gonna be tough to fix, though. I've used toothpaste to fix little scratches in glass-top tables, too. Lex
That's awesome! Except I think I've read that circular scratches are a lot worse for CDs than outward scratches. Whenever I clean my CDs, I go from inside to out.
I remember always having a horrible time with Brasso, and toothpaste usually seemed to work like a charm. It felt like a miracle when it finally worked.
Yea, I thought you were supposed to go from inside out as well. But, oh well. You fixed your CD! Congrats. I actually looked this up earlier this summer, because one of my CD's were scratched as well. I was too afraid to use toothpaste, in case I would make it worse. So, I tried what they said to do first, rinse it off. And it turns out, that was all that was needed.
