I'm neither for nor against the 2012 talk.

Since no one can see into the future, we cannot say that 2012 will or won't happen. We can't call it pure fact or fear mongering because we just don't know.

Maybe the world will end on December 21, 2012. Maybe aliens will attack. Maybe we'll sucuumb to a zombie plague. Maybe the economy will collapse. Maybe absolutely nothing will happen and we'll continue to live our lives normally for years to come. Maybe something will happen tomorrow, next week, next year, the next decade. We simply don't know.

Oh...my apologies. I was just making fun of the 2012 hype which is complete poppycock. I only posted this more so everyone knew that in upcoming years, we may have difficulties with our technologies. That's all.

when the solar storm happens internet will be down and people will go "Oh Noes I can't watch porn" then there will be riots on the streets and people have to go back to the stone age and look at magazines.

Some people maintain close relationships over the internet, with people they have met, and people they haven't. Then theres the fact that so much shit is run through the internet. Important shit. News that we wouldn't be able to get without the internet. Really important stuff, ya know?

Losing the internet IS a big deal.

I'm reminded of the end of Assasins Creed 2.

    Ubisoft was right!

It actually is. So much business is done online now, it would be severely damaging to any country to be without Internet for a significant period of time. You will have seen when those large undersea Internet cables go down. It's not particularly nice. If the Internet breaks, it's not so much the individual people who suffer, it's the economy.

Well im a bit skeptical, they've been saying that were going to have horrible hurrican seasons for the last 5 years and nothing has happened to us. Were still fine down here and again this year they say that the hurricanes are going to be catastrophic. I don't really think that they can fully predict solar storms so im not going to freak out over this. If it does happen then i'll be the first one to say that i was wrong and they were right. But until then i doubt it's going to be that bad, and yep the 2012 fanatics will probably be upping their hype a few notches.

Just using one example, NCBI, or the National Center for Biotechnological Information, has a database that stores information that took billions of dollars and years of research to achieve.

A lot of important governmental communications are done online too...I can certainly tell you wouldn't want to be on a plane when the internet went down. It is a BIG deal, we live in the Information age. Nobody is saying the world is going to go to hell if facebook ploops, but we're in trouble if the entire internet goes out. (Of course, most information is backed up and backed up again, so it would really have too fry everything to do irreparable damage.)

I remember this on a different note. I remember this power surge that blacked out like all of St. Thomas and London (Ontario) for like four hours. It sucked, but we still were okay.

I've heard that the storms are supposed to eventually reach their height sometime in the year 2012, and the movie is based on that. Not sure if that's true, though.
