well I just watched True Grit and I'm really in the mood for another good film. Anyone seen anything good recently? or have a favourite movie that is amazing?

I don't often watch movies in theaters anymore, but my parents saw The King's Speech today, and my father said it was one of the best films he's ever seen, so that might be good. As for my own recommendations, V for Vendetta is exceptionally well made (though somewhat lacking in substance) and Fight Club is well made and substantial, though you may find it a bit hard to watch due to the fight scenes. If you're looking for something a bit lighter, I recently rewatched Amelie, a French film which is surprisingly substantial for a comedy, and a very good film.

Do documentaries count? I watched one called 'Saint of 9/11' that was about a chirstian monk who was a chaplin for the firedepartment. it explored his life, his death on 9/11, and his struggles with the fact that he was gay, and how he overcome it, and worked to be a tireless advocate during the early years of the AIDs epidemic, spending much time with patients, and helping them to know that just because someone is religious, doesnt mean they will turn their back on them because they are gay.

    It was very moving.

'SIN NOMBRE'...came out a while ago. I show the movie to everybody I can. Haven't met one person that doesn't like love it. It's in Spanish but translations are provided. It's worth a look. It takes place in South America. After a gang thug finds love it's taken away from him by his gang so he goes on the run where he starts repaying his life of "sin" by helping a girl, who was about to be raped by his gang leader, reach the U.S. in hopes of finding a better life for the both of them.

Amelie was also an amazing movie. It's so different and refreshing. Not your average movie.

I've been on a Sidney Poitier kick recently. If you aren't familiar with him, one of the most influential actors in Hollywood, first major black actor, first black actor to win an Academy Award, and never made a film that wasn't a pretty important social comment.

My two current favorites are "Guess Who Came To Dinner (the 1967 one, not the remake) and "Slender Thread". Both are simply amazing.

A slightly newer film I really like is "Latter Days" (2003), about a Mormon missionary who is closeted and struggling with his sexuality, and his meeting with a shallow party boy. It's a multi-themed movie with some deeper messages. It has its flaws but it is still a powerful film.

A few I'd suggest are Vanilla Sky, Mulholland Drive, Donnie Darko, Mothman Prophecies, The Science of Sleep and A Single Man.

I saw A Single Man most recently of these and thought it was very well done and has a gay theme. Matthew Goode and Nicholas Hoult are really cute too. I'm thinking I might like to read the book it's based on.

    Anyone seen Kynodontas / Dogtoothe?

[the layering of the audio on that trailer is actually amazing]
Once you get behind the sheer ridiculousness of the plot, you'll find it's actually wonderful :3

The King's Speech has to be one of the best films I have seen in awhile too. It was FANTASTIC! George VI and his wife, Queen Elizabeth, (who Hitler infamously titled "The Most Dangerous Woman In Europe), did a great job at lifting the spirits of a nation and an Empire during the darkest days of WWII. The movie, however, focuses on their unexpected rise to the throne, a throne that neither of them wanted.
