I am only marginally interested in the ESC though. But my bf is a big fan - and since it's basically just around the corner this year he got 2 tickets for the finale.

Oh god.. here we go.
I'm going to post the song representing Portugal. Please don't stone me (not even, and I want to make it really clear, if I say Jehova).

There's an explanation why this song was choosen.
As you might or not know, Portugal is going through a very dark period with a enormous economical crisis and a political one as well.

The group that is singing the song aren't singers, they are a comidians group that have these characters based on stereotypes of the Carnation Revolution (25th April 1974- you can check wikipedia to know how it happened).

I've even heard rumours that we might not be able to sing it, as apparently political messages aren't allowed at the Eurovision- I'm not sure if this is true or not.
The song sounds a lot for what it is: a kind of gentle intervention song.
Everyone was stunt when they won the competion to represent the country. Their supporters over facebook got them there.
As always we are going to loose, probably even be bared from entering the contest ever again. *sigh*

Oh, the song is called "A Luta é alegria" which means "The Fight is joy".

I love Eurovision and despite the UK having awful entries apart from 02 and 09, I think we have a great chance of winning this year! C'mon Blue!

 

does anybody know if the songs need to be performed completely live?
because .. i would guess that blue wouldn't be able to pull that song off when they really have to sing live

The 1974 Portuguese entry incited the Carnation Revolution (whose anniversary, coïncidentally, is in only a couple of days D=) so I don't see why subtle political statements aren't allowed... like 1980 Morocco hinted at ridding of what can be interpreted as Israel to ensure prosperity for all... or 2005 Ukraine was telling Russia to go Goodbye... and 1993 Croatia was complained to be Croat propaganda by the Serbians.
So political statements are more or less impossible to rid of altogether, but I believe they'll only ban the more explicit instances, whereas there is considerable subtlety in Luta é Alegria. ^^

Unfortunately our song doesn't stand a chance.. it's boring, not very catchy, and I know for a fact that there's a lot of racists in Europe. I think there's a lot of people who won't vote for a black artist, it's sad, but it's a fact.

 

The song you're talking about didn't incite the revolution, it was choosen as a sign by the military that it was underway. The song itself isn't poitical at all, it's a plain love song, called "E depois do amor" (After love).

I just shudder to think what people are going to call us after seeig the group and their attitude:icon_redf

On another note: EEEEEeeeeeeEEEEE eurovision in less than a wk and the semifinals in 2 days or so ^^ =D ^^ =D ^^ =D

 

So how is everybody? The first semi-finale is tonight.

Meanwhile I can say that since last weekend Düsseldorf is full of people from basically everywhere around the globe. If you are in the center, hearing German has become a rare thing :lol: And it really is a somewhat gay festival .. so many hot guys :luv:
There are eurovision parties and events all over the city of course. I have seen a car with some performer in it, but I still don't know who it was :lol: A few dutch people came with a ship down the rhine (river) and our Lena performed on their ship later. The parties are full of TV crews - but also the performers show up. The hot guys from eldrine (Georgia) showed up, also the girl from Armenia (whose song everybody seems to be singing .. maybe the winning song?). Thursday we will seeing the other semi-final, my bf is at the "jury final" on Friday, and Saturday we will watch the final at a gay bar and go to the official gay esc party afterwards.

I have to say I wasn't really an ESC fan before, but the city is so full of life and interesting people .. it is contagious :lol:

 

I want to hear songs in languages other than English!

yesterday we were at the promenade/river walk at the rhine where a small "pink wednesday" event was. right said fred performed live on stage ... but we considered them to be quite boring we strolled a bit towards the old town, met many ESC fans .. explained some south american guy that those big ducks are geese :lol: met a couple from australia - they are having their honeymoon at the ESC! later at the irish pub in the old town we saw the british contestants "blue" they were talking and taking pictures with fans
then we headed home and saw short but big fire work in the middle of a small pond in the city, and almost at home we saw the azerbaijan delegation with their van at a traffic light. it's amazing over how many performers you stumble!

 

The stuff you see, and i actually live here. i haven't seen anyone lol

Today is another semi-final. I'm rooting for the Netherlands
