I'm really not a huge fan of older movies, but one stands out in my memory. I had to watch Buster Keaton's "The General" for a class once, and I think it has held up rather well with the passage of time. It's definitely not the funniest movie I've ever seen, but I can see why it's remembered.

I'm not fond of "old" movies, like before 1950. But great b&w films since then:

    1. The Apartment (this is like the perfect movie)
    2. Raging Bull
    3. Night of the Living Dead
    4. Dr Strangelove
    5. Young Frankenstein

It's been too long since I've seen Young Frankenstein. And The Apartment is great, too....

    1. Double Indemnity
    2. Sunset Boulevard

Though frankly those are the only two I've seen which I really feel obligated to put up.

Those are both great, too. I'm a big fan of both Barbara Stanwyck and William Holden. She was absolutely gorgeous. And so was he....

Oh God, I can't limit my list to just 5 I don't think. I see the OP is a Howard Hawks fan...me too, but I have different Hawks favorites and I'm even more of a Hitchcock, Capra, and Wilder fan then I am Hawks.

    1. Some Like It Hot (Marilyn Monroe's sex appeal just oozes from the screen)
    2. It Happened One Night
    3. Ball of Fire
    4. Anatomy of a Murder
    5. Shadow of a Doubt

    Honorable Mentions:

    The Lady Eve
    To Kill A Mockingbird
    Bringing Up Baby
    Raging Bull
    The Maltese Falcon
    The Philadelphia Story
    A Street Car Named Desire
    The Killing
    The Apartment
Citizen Kane (not a fav, but it's technical wizardry and quality can't be ignored)
    Psycho
    Casablanca
    Arsenic and Old Lace
To Be Or Not To Be
    Can't Take It With You
    Sergeant York

Yeah, I'm a huge classic movie fan. Funny enough I never really wanted to watch b/w movies until I saw Casablanca just a few years ago and now I'm like addicted, lol. A lot of times b/w actually enhances the mood of the film or whatever with the way the lighting and shadows are and such.

Don't get me wrong, I love HD and Blu-Ray and what not, but there's nothing like a director who could created mood just with light and shadow in black and white.

Yeah, it really is...but it's not amongst my very top favorites cause it's a bit of a hard watch. I prefer the more light hearted affair that is Some Like It Hot. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Heh, and I see you're a Wilder fan. I find those interesting choices though as they are probably my least favorite of his films. I'd rank Some Like It Hot, The Apartment, Witness for the Prosecution, Sabrina, Stalag 17 and perhaps even Seven Year Itch above 'em. I dunno, I just found those two kinda dull

BTW, great thing about Billy Wilder is he wasn't just a director, he also wrote the scripts for his films.

I know it was mentioned, but you will pee yourself from shock after watching how damn good this movie is. Every time I watch it I'm speechless. And I consider Gloria Swanson's performance in this film as one of the greatest in film history, without a doubt.

Only five? This is going to be difficult... (most movies I watch tend to be at least fifty years old...) Well, here are five and the order in which they appear has no significance:

    1.) The Mysterious Lady (1928)
    2.) Forty Guns (1957)
    3.) The Miracle of Morgan's Creek (1944)
    4.) Pandora's Box (1929)
    5.) Now, Voyager (1942)

I tried to be a bit different with this list. They are all good films and I'd recommend them to any film addict!
