I'm not talking about those silly indie films they play on logo/showtime etc, but classic and/or iconic films with real depictions of gays.

I watched Victim the other day, this film from 1961 about an antagonist trying to blackmail gay men into giving him money or else he'd report and send them to jail for being gay. A very controversial subject in 1961, where it was still illegal in England to engage in homosexual acts.

And of course there's 1975's Dog Day Afternoon, where Al Pacino played a gay bank robber in NYC (based on a true story).

Kiss of the Spider Woman comes to mind. William Hurt plays a gay man in prison for having sex with an underage boy and the movie is about his relationship with his (straight) cellmate.

Never heard of it, but it sounds really interesting.

    It's pretty great.
Another one you might mention is Simon Birch. It doesn't deal with it outright, but John Irving, who wrote A Prayer for Owen Meany, the astronomically fantasmic book the movie was based on, has stated that protagonist John Wheelwright is gay.

There were quite a few Pre-Code films with mentions of homosexuality.

Al Pacino's character in Dog Day Afternoon was actually bisexual. Just saying.
