Why is some music considered "gay"? I mean, I understand Lady Gaga, Cher, Kylie Minogue, etc. but on facebook the other day that I was going to see Maroon 5 live soon and like 3 people wrote "gay". I don't really get how music can be "gay", so could I have some sort of insight on this?
They might have been using the colloquial definition of the word "gay", i.e. as a synonym for stupid, a replacement for "lame". There's also this idea in our culture that "gay" and "manly" are opposites, so anything that isn't considered sufficiently manly is dubbed "gay" from the male perspective (see: Justin Bieber, Paramore (going on personal experience here), and apparently Maroon 5). That the explanation I find the most likely.
I used to get teased all the time for liking Queen, because of Freddie Mercury. I just told people to shut up because I liked what I liked. As far as I'm concerned, music is not 'gay' or straight'. It's just music. It's all the preconceived BS that people place on the music, using their own values, that's screwed up. Just the same way that they do to people they don't feel fits their values. Music is awesome & it's honestly one of the biggest reasons I love life! I love Within Temptation! Sharon is so awesome & she's one of my favourite vocalists ever!!!
'On today's program you will hear Gospel, and Rhythm and Blues, and Jazz. All these are just labels, we know that music is music.' - Awesomely appropriate quote from a Primal Scream song.
Granted, they didn't know what AC / DC also means: Some songs are written about being LGBT, other than that - no idea.
Showtunes are generally considered gay, aren't they? Also, any song with lyrics like, "Still sitting pretty with a pistol in hand/ Living to love you, will you be my man?/ If I beg, if I plead, won't you please, please, please, satisfy me?" sounds pretty gay if a guy sings it- which I can't help but do...
I know I'm a girl, & I'm pretty sure I'm gay, but I don't really understand what the whole thing with Melissa Etheridge or Indigo Girls is. I like both of them, but it's just a passing interest. I dunno why girls say you have to be gay to like them, as it just good music IMO...
If you asked my friends in high school, pretty much anything that wasn't rap was gay music. What an industry, eh?
