Torchwood - Gay scene

There were 500 complaints over a scene in the BBC show Torchwood. I honestly don't see what all the fuss is about. It was shown after the watershed and I just think the people who complained were homophobes.

There are people that don't realise that Torchwood is just a vehicle to play gay porn on mainstream TV?

I don't think there needs to be a SEVEN MINUTE sex scene in any show except a porno, regardless of the orientation of the folks poking. I never really understood the purpose of scenes like that except to titillate the audience. They're not really that great for either moving forward the storyline or deepening characterization.

There are ways for LGBT people to be on TV and in movies without being portrayed as dirty dirty sluts. Which is, as I understand, part of how "Captain Jack" is primarily characterized - a bisexual slut who will sleep with anyone who is good-looking.

Can we get any LGBT folks on-screen who don't sleep with anything that moves, or otherwise have raunchy sex as their primary identifier as a character?

I don't watch Torchwood, this is something I heard about on an TV show I was watching earlier. I see your point though. Do you think that less people would of complained if the couple was straight?

The BBC can't win on this one - they received complaints when the scenes were cut from an earlier episode 'Torchwood' sex scene changes 'make little difference', says BBC - Torchwood News - US TV - Digital Spy and now get complaints when they don't cut them!

Anyway, IIRC Captain Jack isn't supposed to be Bisexual -

TBH though, Torchwood at 21.00 on BBC ONE - never a sensible idea (regardless of the genders involved)! Should have left it to 22.00 on BBC THREE where this would be fewer Mary Whitehouses watching. The quote from the same article

Was this in the new season of torchwood? I've been meaning to watch it but haven't quite got round to it yet, this might prompt me to get on with that!

Also, on the point of gay sex being shown on tv as opposed to straight sex, haven't any of these people writing complaints watched trueblood? It's basically jut straight porn with the occasional vampire thrown in.

I've never seen Torchwood. I just know I prefer the majority of my sex scenes in TV or movies "off screen" (or cut to a minute or two before fadeout) rather than getting to see the whole thing. I think our society is a little oversexualized...

Though for these two guys, I could probably make an exception.

Exactly. The sex scenes are too in-your-face in Torchwood now (where as before in Series One and Two, they were nice additions), but Miracle Day is just awful due to plotting and lack of any enjoyable episodes for the most part, from what I've seen. Shame, because I can still enjoy the ridiculously over-the-top first series, the improved second series and the awesome Children of Earth, but this...

Lol at how the article describes it as an "explicit gay sex" scene. How is a couple of pecks on the shoulder explicit (I know the UK version is censored but the article is from a UK newspaper)?

I wonder if the 500 people who complained about this scene also complained about the torture scene in the same episode or the scenes from previous weeks on people being burnt alive or the woman being crushed in the car til just her eyeball was left?

Having said that, I do agree that the scene was too long... like the rest of the series it was tedious filler and could easily have been over in half the time.

erm, is it just me,,, but Torchwood this season sucks, it's so much inferior than the past 3 seasons.
1) No Ianto, no awesome british team members...instead we're stuck with pretty incompetent and rather boring americans
2) Gwen needs botox, and she acts so much more mopey than in the past,,,so much less awesome kickass moments
3) Jack also needs botox and better haircut, and the sex scenes are rather corny.
4) Too much filler stuff...not enough action scenes.... generally uninteresting story line.

I'm not usually the one to skip the sex part but honestly I just FFed the fucking parts bc it was so boring and not really important to the story either, but that's just me.
