Default What age had the most impact on your music tastes?

What age were you when you shaped your music tastes?

Quite a number of my favorite songs were popular songs when I was 14-15, or ones I started listening to at that age.

I was into music as a child but I really started enjoying it around age 14 or 15. My grandma bought me a CD for Christmas and that started my music obsession.

Probably about 12-13 as well.

I remember because it was when I was playing Need for Speed: Underground, which was released in 2003 so I would've been about that age. I thought "Wow this music is awful", so I muted it and played this in the background instead .

That relaxing music was surprisingly enjoyable during those races..

I always really enjoyed music. My first real sentence was a line from a Phil Collin's song (I see your true colours...to be exact. hehe).
I started to REALLY listen to music around age nine. I was traumatized by my half-sister and practically spent every day (for three years) in my room. I listened to a LOT of music (my dad's ELO, Black Sabbath, Queen, Ozzy Osbourne and Aerosmith tapes/cds and the radio). It had a way of making me forget the things she told me...

Before age nine, I still had a love for music; my dad always had something in the tape deck on road trips.

I re-read a journal I kept as a 4 year old and at an age where you listen to Raffi...I wrote down “My favurit artist is Alannnis Morrisette”. Yea, I had issues at 4. LOL.

I became interested in video game music because of Pokemon, the Sonic Adventure games, Sonic Advance 3, and Sonic Heroes. I think I was around 10 when that happened. This interest in video game music also gave me a taste for electronic-sounding music.

Gorillaz rocked my world at 16. I was obsessed. Heck, I still kind of am. Gorillaz had a huge impact on what kind of non-video game music I listened to. The collaborators opened up doorways into bands and genres that I never would have thought of before. Alternative became my favorite genre as I found many Alternative bands whose music somehow reminded me of Gorillaz.

So yeah. That's how I came to enjoy alternative, electronic-sounding music genres, and video game music.

I started enjoying music when I was 12-13, but I got into better music around 14-15. I read Spin magazine religiously and found out about a lot of music from them.

well its a continuous process for me, but I always have liked music, and like all things to me, I dont just like a particular or a few genres, i will give any type a chance, but my favs are mostly 60s,70s and 80s. from a young age my dad had made me and my older sister music lovers, we listened to fleet wood mac, pink Floyd, Metallica and lots others, later my sister introduced me to metal, and no, Metallica is not metal, and yeah, my boyfriend even got me into electro and rave and stuff but i prefer things like twisted sister, Alice Cooper, some Ozzie Ozborne, and a lot of Pink Floyd, i even have a record player in my room, as for the age at which i was most impacted on musically... no particular one I think.

About 14-15, listening to the dance music on "long wave radio Atlantic 2-5-2" (yes kids, that was Dance music on Long Wave*!), but my music tastes changed somewhat while I was at uni and much of the music I listen to now is of the same genres (Indie/Rock) that I listening to around 21/22, but also a lot of what I was hearing all the time as a child from my parents CD collection and on Red Rose Gold (the best of the 60s, 70s and Today!). I guess in that way my whole life has had an impact on my music tastes somewhat, but those years were probably the most influential.

* For the benefit of those across the pond Long Wave is a radio band which offers even worse (but similar) audio quality than Medium Wave radio does now -all that's left there now in the UK are the speech stations BBC Radio 4 and RTÉ Radio 1 which have there primary outlets on FM across the UK and Éire respectively)

Definitely when I was 10-11. I'm thinking it might have something to do with me starting puberty at that time.

"Turned on, Tuned in, Dropped Out" if you know what I mean and really started to appreciate rhythm and texture in music.

When I was about 13 I discovered that there were songs that actually weren't one note repeated over and over again. Never turned back. XD

From about age 14/15 to now. I used to listen to pop and rap, but then I discovered rock and all of its genres. I'm always finding new genres of rock/metal that I like, but I don't see my tastes changing majorly for a long time.

I was 11-12 when Nirvana came out. I learned to play the guitar, and have spent years listening to and playing music ever since.

8 to now. I used to listen to all of my mother's (and grandmother's) music, aka everything from the 20s to the 80s. Thankfully, my sister introduced me to Panic! at the Disco and The All American Rejects when I was 8. After that, I enjoyed certain pop artrists and alternative. Then a friend showed me everything from rock to heavy metal (and screamo) last year. I like a lot of stuff, and I don't think that's changing anytime soon. (:

I used to be really into rap, but when I was 16, my friends got me hocked on Guitar Hero, and as a side effect, rock music. My tastes are still dominated by rock, and Guitar Hero (later Rock Band) has been a huge influence on that. No other shift in my music tastes has happened since that was as significant, so yeah, definitely age 16.
