Hey guys, So today in class we were talking aboot animation documentary. Our guest lecturer/univeristy proffesor/animation director was talking about some of her expeirences with animation documentary and in doing she referenced one of her works, John and Michael Essentially the story is based off of two real men with Down Syndrome who were in love with each other. Although the story in itself is "fictionalized," the characters in the story are based off of two real people that the director used to work with at a camp. She made the film first and then asked a person with Down Syndrome to explain the story for her. After person with Down Syndrome explained the story she actually used his speech as the narration for the film. Essentially it's a controversial film for dealing with sexuality in Down Syndrome. In past people with Down's weren't believed to have sexuality but recent rehashing of the issue is starting to prove otherwise. However, I think this is a wonderful film that has alot to say about special needs people, sexuality, and love if anything. Such a simple story but truly impactful. I suggest you check out some more of her work as well if you are interested in Down Syndrome and special needs. She has done some pretty cool stuff.
