Suspense and the mood just before a "scare" scene plays a big role, and these days they don't put much effort into that. BGM and SFX plays a role in scaring the audience too (i.e suspense music), and they're either inserted in the wrong scene or aren't played at all to fully utilise what it is that's going to scare you. Make-up, props and visual effects need to make the horror movie look as 'real' as possible, bad visual effects just makes you lose interest as the movie goes on.

Today's horror movies seem to focus more on the 'shock and awe' effects of gore than on the quality of a well-told, truly creepy story.

The plots are rehashed or make less sense and they try to shock you with blood and guts instead of suspense. The only good thing is that the special effects have gotten better in horror movies today

Different spins on them, in my opinion. With the advance of movie making technology (ie: special effects) movie graphics look different than they did, say, 10-20 years ago.

Too many of them focus purely on gore and try to be too over the top rather than being subtle and saying something interesting and original. Even the better special effects aren't necessarily an advantage as it can make film makers lazy, sometimes the lack of a big budget or easily available techniques seems to have made them more inventive.

A lot of them usually try too hard to make it scary. Like adding a bunch of guts and intestines everywhere doesn't make it scary...just more entertaining. To make something scary, you have to think outside of the box and put in something unexpected....

OK, I'll answer before reading any of the other replies ...

1. What age group do you belong to?
26-35

2. Are you: Female (mostly)

3. What is the best kind of horror movie?
psychological

4. How old does a movie need to be in order to be a classic?
20yrs
(Though I don't think "classic" has much to do with age, but it has to have been around for 10-20 i think, thinking Pulp Fiction for instance)

5. Do you prefer modern or classic horror?
Classic

6. Are classic horror movies outdated?
No

7. Do modern horror movies try less?
Yes

8. Does more blood make a movie scarier?
No

9. Does less blood make a movie scarier?
No

10. Are horror movies more or less effective if most of the “terror” (the monster, the killer, the gore, etc.) is off camera?
No

11. Is it a good thing to remake a classic horror movie?
No (in general)

12. Was there a time when it was okay to remake horror movies that were classics at the time?
No

13. Why are horror movies different today?
They put a lot less effort in the story and characters and assume they can FX they're way to scary. Both is still needed.

Most of them have no thought put into them, they are remakes, its just not scary, not realistic enough, or they don't make sense.

because of the tecnology advances, its become less real and more fake with all the editing and photshop, just doesnt have the good old classic "scare" tactic, more lke bad acting.

Filmmakers don't try as hard. They think if you put more blood and gore in it will be scarier. It just makes it look cheaper in my eyes, like they put less effort into the story.
