Hmm.. What about books from the romantic era?.. Like Frankenstein by Mary shelley, or the writings of Edgar Allan Poe (dark romantic era) >_<
    ...
    Also, Perfume by Patrick Süskind
A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess
The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, its a short story, but its absolutely amazing and is still one of my favorites...
To The lighthouse by Virginia Woolf is really good too, but I'm not quite sure if it would be your cup of tea
.. Since you like science fiction, Anything from HG Wells (only science fiction author that I can remember right now >_<)

Terry Pratchett books are really good, they are mostly fantasy/humour.
Darren Shan is also a good writer and his books keep to guessing.

    THIS!!!

Also The Dark Tower series by Stephen King. I would recommend reading The Stand and 'Salem's Lot first though. They tie in pretty heavily. In fact so do a lot of his other books, but those are the most heavily influenced.

I really like Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer. The protagonist is probably my most memorable literary character.

Have you read any HG Wells or Jules Verne? I particularly like Wells' stories because they are short enough to be squeezed in between longer novels you may be reading.

Benighted, by Kit Whitfield. It's set in a world where 99% of the population are werewolves and the non-werewolves (called "barebacks"*) have the job of keeping werewolves in check during the full moon. There's a lot of hatred between lycanthropes and barebacks, and even persecution. Very good examination of the nature of hatred, persecution, and abuse of power.

*The title of the book in the UK is Bareback

The Plague, by Albert Camus. A classic of existentialist/absurdist literature. Takes place in a city that suddenly has an attack of bubonic plague. The characters try to find meaning and purpose in a world turned upside down by death. If you've read The Stranger (also by Camus) you have to read this book, I consider it a response to Stranger, which is also a good book.

We Have Always Lived in the Castle, by Shirley Jackson. I suppose it's a horror novel, but there's no supernatural element or violence. It's about two adult sisters living in a mansion. Several years ago everyone else in their family was poisoned, probably by the older sister, although she was acquitted in her trial. It's a story of intense isolation and alienation. Very creepy, very good. I need to reread it. You should also read her classic short story "The Lottery."

Sabriel, by Garth Nix. One of the best YA fantasy novels out there. Sabriel has lived most of her life south of the Wall, which celebrates Ancelstierre (essentially WWI-era England) from the Old Kingdom, a world where magic still exists. One day, she receives a message from her necromancer father that he has been trapped in death and goes on a quest through the Old Kingdom to find and rescue him. Nix's book Shade's Children is also very good, though much darker than the already dark Sabriel.

This! It's one of my favorite books of all time.

If you're not into crime fiction, then you wouldn't find them very interesting, but the Harry Bosch novels by Michael Connelly are fantastic.

I really love Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk, author of Fight Club, Choke, and Survivor. It is about a former model trying to find her identity (after her jaw got blown off) with a transgender named Brandy Alexander. Each character has their own secret that gets revealed throughout the book. After I finished the book it blew me away. I really hope you read this one!! I love the way Brandy Alexander tells the main character to forget the past and live life for your happy future. I can relate to the message of the book and hope many others can too.

I love Darren Shan. As a fantasy/sci-fi fan, I highly recommend them! Though only the Saga of Darren Shan. I could never really get into the Demonata series. :/

I wasn't a fan of that one. The ending felt horribly out-of-character, and that ruined it for me.
