Default Character you relate to:

What character do you relate to most in film/tv/book? Similarities? Differences? Doesn't need to be exact as my example, since partly a rant, partly a random thread, partly a way to pass the time.

Personally,

CHARACTER: Jesse D’Amato

TV SHOW: In Treatment (Drama Series)

SIMILARITIES (IT GETS REALLY WEIRD HOW EXACT IT IS):
- Adopted & LGBT
- "It sounds like those guys on canal street that are selling fake rolexes, like 'what does it matter if it isn't a rolex as long as you think it's a rolex?' But it still isn't a rolex, it's still a cheap piece of shit no matter what you think." Self-metaphor he used that I can relate to.
- Feels like I'm distant from my adoptive mother because she's always "on edge" around me and only I can see this. Ironically when I came out my Mom said she was more than okay with it, but flash back five years ago when it somewhat came out through writing in a script I wrote and was really proud of - she asked me if I was gay and made me promise never to show my Dad. No wonder I was scared about coming out. She gets way too over worked whenever I mention my biological parents. She can be alright sometimes, but then it's like she just radically changes and acts distanced.
- My Dad's a Republican and while he seems okay with me being bi, whenever talking politics and I say "not straight" this look appears on his face and he sighs. Very similar to Jesse's story about his mom and catholicism. Although it's probably all just in my head. He'd rather I got 100s in class rather than 80s. But, he can be cool.
- The minor details too - my dad's Italian and great in math, my mom rifles through my things.
- The story concerning my biological father always changes while my biological mother always remains the same - a woman stuck somewhere in the slums. Kind of a misogynistic view.
- The being poor part is always part of my backstory, although people tell me I "invented" it.
- That since I'm adopted I feel like "anyone" can be my family.
- I'm always running in search of that "perfect home" - I'm still running in many ways.
- I test people, sometimes I even test them in things I know they'll fail, just to see if they'll still be there though this is majorly in my unconscious.
- I have an easier time talking to my Mom at times about liking guys than my Dad.
- "Gave me up for dead" is a figure of speech I often use.
- I feel I was difficult to raise due to questioning things.
- Rather than hearing static, I often hear loud ringing sounds when anxious.
- I wonder what's wrong with me due to being given up for dead, there's that expression.
- Always bats things off with sarcasm, which angers some people.
- Artistic/creative - having a different "view" on things.
- I look in the mirror wondering if I'm handsome, it changes every single day depending on how people react. If a girl smiles, I feel handsome. If a girl doesn't notice at all, I feel ugly. I look in the mirror a lot trying to just figure it out. I wonder if people get this confidence from having confident adults who look like them, their "natural" parents. Everyone, who doesn't have something, is more confident here.
- Angered when my parents take anyone in like they were their sons, similar to Jesse's anger of his dad taking a stranger in to partner up with on "D'Amato and sons" - "D'Amato and someone he wishes was his son" (line from the show).
- I've offered to do things to get out of very stressful situations, 'nuff said.
- I sometimes unconsciously sabotage things to ensure that they do go bad.
- I sometimes push people away before they can push me away or ensure that they do push me away.
- Older male figures become "fathers" to me (mentors, close teachers, therapists, etc.)

DIFFERENCES:
- Lives in NYC instead of upstate NY, although this might change soon.
- 17 years old rather than 23. The actor was 22/23 at time of filming though.
- He's very sexually active while I'm really not.
- He's gay while I'm bi.
- His Dad's a plumber and his family isn't well off financially while mine is.
- He's a photographer, I'm a writer.
- His biological parents have contacted him, mine never did.

Other than that, it's all the same basically.

I always love watching this arc because so many things does seem to come straight from my life, which character do you relate to most?

he has people who love him and he has super haters? it doesnt seem like there is anyone in between? alot of people are like that with me.

Toph from Avatar the Last Airbender X) She's blunt, independent, and gruff. Also, Deb from Dexter. Swears like a sailor and doesn't let anyone tell her she can't do something.

I'm almost exclusively interested in autobiographies, but I relate to Edie Sedgwick very well. She really was too fragile for this world and I've felt like that for my entire life. Sometimes I still don't even pump my own gas. She was spoiled materially and starved emotionally. She's my idol. That's why I've always used her as my avatar.

Character: Caliban

Comic: Uncanny X-Men

Similarities:
-rejected by society (or part of society in my case) for being different
-rejected by his father
-has gone to great lengths and way out of his way to help and protect the woman (men [plural] in my case) that he loves, even defying an authority figure (Callisto in his case; my mother in my case[s])
-lets the woman he's in love with go because he knows she'll be happier without him (again, men [plural] in my case)
-unrequited love
-has been persecuted due to his looks (As a member of the Morlocks, this comes naturally. Also, his father rejects him and throws him out for being a mutant, and his mutation had a physical manifestation; I was also picked on because of my physical appearance all throughout schooling)
-appears scary/mean but is very nice, loving and caring on the inside
-physical mutation (I don't have a physical mutation, but I do have some medical problems and hereditary traits that alter certain aspects of my physical appearance)

DIFFERENCES:
-gave the woman he was in love with an unfair ultimatum, practically forcing her to be with him (although, he realizes the error of this). This is something I'd never do.
-lives in a sewer
-has superpowers
-constantly talks in the 3rd person

Sakaki from Azumanga Daioh

Similarities:
  • Is naturally athletic (thanks to my parents being trained athletes), but actually doesn't care for sports
  • Is shy and reticent, but desires friendship
  • Is a better than average, but not outstanding, student (I've always done really well, but I was never a top student)
  • Despite her reputation, she secretly loves cute things, esp. cats
  • Owns stuffed animals
  • Is disallowed by her parents from owning cats because of an allergy
  • May have had a secret admirer once upon a time that she didn't acknowledge (a guy in my case; a girl in hers)
  • Stood out in school (I was usually either the only East Asian, or one of only a few East Asians in my class; she's unnaturally tall for a Japanese girl)
  • Has bizarre dreams about friends on occasion
Differences:
  • I'm shorter than the average woman (though I suppose I'm average for a Chinese person)
  • The cat allergy is my own; Sakaki's mother is allergic to them
  • I don't secretly desire to be cute (my love of cute stems from a love of innocence)

I am most like Fang from Maximum Ride (book)

Similarities: Withdrawn from everyone, ill-tempered, secretly romantic, protective of family, and loyal.

Differences: He is a man, straight, and has bird wings.

I wish I had wings.

Dr. House

From House MD

He looks at the world for the way it is, and doesn't sugar coat things, yet people hate him for it. He isn't an ass he is being realistic.
