Hey everyone. I've recently got back into Pokemon and it occurred to me that it seems for each element of pokemon there seems to be one pokemon (and I'm talking about a group, so for instance Kabuto and Kabutops would be considered the same pokemon so they don't compete) that is dominant in people's minds. So, for each element tell me what the first pokemon that jumps into your mind is that you feel best represents the element. This is just for fun. I'm really intending for this to be generation 1 classic 151, but if you aren't that familiar with G1 feel free to use others. (Because Steel and Dark weren't G1 I'm omitting them from my list, but feel free to add them if you wish). Just doing this to see how similar our response are.

I'll go first. Spoiler texting so my answers don't effect other people's.

Trying to think of these now while limiting myself only to the original 151 was interesting...it used to seem like so many pokemon, but now it seems that there really weren't too many options for each type in the 1st generation. Some types in RBY had only one main 3-stage family that I can think of, maybe one Red and one Blue, and then a few other scattered types. I'm glad we have 649 to catch nowadays, though the 151 still have a special place in my heart.

    Normal: Rattata, Raticate
    Flying: Pidgey, Pidgeotto, Pidgeot
    Grass: Oddish, Gloom, Vileplume
    Fire: Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard
    Water: Squirtle, Wartortle, Blastoise
    Bug: Weedle, Kakuna, Beedrill
Electric: Electabuzz (Pikachu is too much of a symbol for all Pokemon to just represent Electric-type)
    Fighting: Hitmonchan/Hitmonlee
Psychic: Abra, Kadabra, Alakazam (or Mew/Mewtwo if counting legendaries)
    Ghost: Gastly, Haunter, Gengar
    Rock: Onix
    Poison: Koffing, Weezing
    Dragon: Dratini, Dragonair, Dragonite
    Ground: Diglett, Dugtrio
    Ice: Lapras
    Steel: Steelix
    Dark: Umbreon

Its strange. Even though I've played most of the generation (all but 3 and 6) I still remember barely any of the pokemon except the ones from G1. I can literally name all 151 of the classics, but I'm playing soul silver now and I don't remember like any of the G2 pokemon in it. I didn't even remember the starters. I just played through white a few months ago and I already feel like I could barely even 20 from the game anymore. Maybe it has to do with watching the show back when G1 was popular.

I am somewhat similar, in that I could name and identify any of the original 151 like it's nothing, it's literally ingrained into my brain, knowing a Mankey from an Exeggcute from a Drowzee for me is like being able to name the color red from the color blue from the color yellow.

I've played every single generation of Pokemon (btw there hasn't been a 6th generation yet, though they're working on it, so you've only missed one gen :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:), but could only name a handful from each of the others. Some Pokemon from Gold and Silver have almost accomplished 'classic' status in my mind (e.g. Marrill or Togepi or Lugia or Chikorita) but even Pokemon from those games (which I loved) I don't quite have memorized.

You didn't play the 3rd generation, and in my opinion if you were going to skip a generation, that would be the least unfortunate to miss. Ruby/Sapphire were a step-down from Gold/Silver IMO. Unfortunately Gold/Silver/Crystal game cartridges had some battery defect that causes them to lose the ability to save game data so I can't go back and replay those unless I just wanted to do it all in one sitting.

Well you can play Heart gold and soul silver. Also, aren't black/white 2 considered generation 6? I heard they have completely new pokemon.

  12. Black/White 2 are still Generation 5. Its the same pokemon; the gameplay is just altered. It's actually quite different, and I'm enjoying it.
