there's a bit of text to read here, but i tried to space it for nice, quick reading

Considering that the majority of the population that plays video games is high school to college-level males, maybe it's not surprising that as an industry, video games haven't really been open to homosexuality.

    But maybe that's evolving:

Rockstar Games, the same folks who made Grand Theft Auto, are re-releasing their game Bully on wii and xbox 360.

    What's the game about
    - kinda like GTA, but much less violent and illegal, b/c it's about a kid at prep school

    - Jimmy Hopkins, or whatever his name is, goes around doing various missions in the school

    - along the way, Jimmy can form relationships...with any sutdent he wants

ok, so all this was in the PS2 version--if they wanted, gamers could hook up with dudes, but never had to for any reason

    What makes it relevant
    - being released on the 360 means that it has "Achievements"--unlockable awards for doing certain tasks

    - Now, achievements aren't really worth anything but useless points and bragging rights, but hardcore gamers try to get EVERY ONE THEY CAN

    - This time around, there is an Achievement for kissing 20 boys (there's also one for kissing girls). This means that hardcore gamers will have to explore that aspect of the game if they really want to "complete" it

    - Full Story

So, is the industry evolving?? Is this going to be the start of more gay themes in mainstream games? and what would that mean to gamers everywhere?

    other stuff:
    - potential for lesbian relationship in Mass Effect, although that made the whole game get labeled "porn" by the idiot mainstream press

    - Army of Two is about two male mercenaries who fight alongside one another. rumors are that the gayness was really toned down and that both characters are straight, but early showings were raising plenty of questions in people's minds

I'm sure any PC gamers could point out a slew of other titles, but I'm interested in the mainstream-ish games that people hear a lot about. Could the industry finally be maturing enough to handle issues like homosexuality?

I believe that in the sims 2 for the computer you can basically hook up with anyone, correct me if I'm wrong.

I believe so, but as far as I know it wasn't something that the developers set out to make gamers sort of "have" to do

Not with the InSiminator tho, anyone hooks up with you then. If they don't like you, just change them.

Wow I was justing think gay relationships in games 2day couldnt think of any at the time. Then i come home to find this thread. I wasnt aware that was in Bully. I'm quite surprised, i had to look it up to be sure about that myself (http://xbox360achievements.org/guide.php?type=&gameID=305 It's the very last one on the list.) I think that this is a step in the right direction. Personally I'd like see a strong story based RPG with a gay relationship as part of the main storyline.

I must confess that since getting 360 a week or so ago, I've become an achievement whore, but the Wii is still my 1st love. Have to say bully never really interested me but now i might check it out.

Fable for Xbox 360 allows you to flirt, marry, and move in with both women and men (your character is always male). Of course, you don't have to, but the option's there. Just thought I'd add that

Since I'm a Sims 2 addict/expert, it is possible for you to flirt and be any of the main sexualities (straight, gay, bi). You can even have same-sex marriages (called civil unions in the game) and adopt. With certain hacks, it's possible for same-sex couples to naturally have a baby together! The Sims 2 is a very open-minded and diverse game. That's why I love it so much.:icon_bigg

Fable is a very fun game to play and the father in the plot you get the easier it is to get people to like you because you get "popular" all over da world.

lol, i remember getting followed around by all the guys with little hearts over their heads. great fun!

Fable 2 might support lesbian relationships too, if your main character can be female. ^_^

The Sims 1 allowed you to have homosexual relationships too, they were actually just as easy as heterosexual ones! And I believe there was always a chance that you would have a baby anytime you chose the "Romantic Kiss" option, no matter what genders your sims were ^^

Then again, the Sims 1 also allowed you to meet someone for the first time in the morning and, by the end of the day, have them move in with you and sleep in the same bed! Everything's harder in the sequel, which was mostly to try and give the game some semblance of realism.

In the new Harvest Moon DS (Cute Version) you are a female, and you can marry a guy, or with their new "Best Friend" system, you can choose to move in with a female (In ur house) and then later can adopt a baby...

They need to add this to the guy version otherwise it's just like society around where I live (Girl + Girl = Hot, Guy + Guy = Eww), and I'll be boycotting Harvest Moon

how do you think people would react to a game where the main character was inherently gay--that is, where the developers made him gay, with no bearing on player choices?

Yep, as mentioned, in Fable you could have a relationship with whomever you wanted. In the hit game Mass Effect, you can have sexual relations with an alien chick even if your character is female, although the race she is is considered asexual, although the whole species appears as female. However, male-male relationships are absent.
