Short story.

So, the other day I posted a prologue and chapter 1 of a story I was writing. I kind of hit a dead end with that, but decided to write a short story based off the same characters and along the same basic line, but changing up the circumstances a little bit. Here is what I have so far. Enjoy.

Friendship Defined

Oliver sat at his kitchen table across from his roommate and best friend Jacob, staring intensely at the cards in his hand. He glanced over Jacob out the window, taking in the scenic view he had of San Francisco Bay and sighed as he tossed down his cards in defeat. Jacob rose quickly from his chair, knocking it back across the room as he shouted “Yes! I finally beat you” victoriously. “Enjoy it for now, next time I will drain your bank accounts” Oliver said, smirking at his friend. Jacob stuck his tongue out and smiled as he walked to the sink and filled his glass with water. As he walked away, Oliver caught himself admiring his friend, and then he quickly crushed the thoughts and looked back out the window. His thoughts about his friend troubled him, partly because he couldn’t understand why he was feeling this way, and he didn’t like the fact that in the instances that these thoughts filled his head, they were hard to get rid of.

As Jacob walked out of the room, Oliver’s phone rang, forcing the thoughts from his mind. He was so happy to see his beloved’s name on appear on the screen, “Hey Emma! It’s so good to hear your voice!” “Hey baby” she replied, “my flight is going to be delayed but I will be back in San Francisco sometime tonight, so I’ll see you tomorrow or Saturday.” “Damn, I was hoping to see you tonight! I suppose tomorrow will have to do. Let me know once you’re home.” As Oliver hung up the phone, Jacob walked in and asked “Why don’t we go out and grab some dinner and then go down to the beach for a while?” “Sounds good to me, I don’t feel like cooking anything.” Oliver had an ominous feeling as they walked out of the house, but he quickly dismissed it as they headed down the busy street.

After dinner, Jacob asked if Oliver still wanted to go to the beach, and once again, the ominous feeling he had earlier swept over him again, but he brushed it off. “Sure, let’s go.” As they were walking down the beach, Oliver inquired why Jacob didn’t have a girlfriend. “Kimberly and you broke up like 6 months ago, when are you going to get back out there and find someone else?” “I don’t know, Oliver. I just…I like being single. I don’t need a woman in my life to make me whole, you know?” Jacob stared directly into Oliver’s eyes and it felt like Jacob was looking into his soul. Oliver was overcome by this odd feeling once more, and he started to reach out to put his hand on Jacob’s shoulder when Jacob stepped back. “Besides, you take up enough of my time” he said laughing. Oliver punched Jacob in the shoulder, “Aren’t you just a regular comedian, you smartass”. The pair broke out into mutual laughter. They headed back home and between the two of them, they emptied the liquor cabinet, spending the night making jokes and talking about days long since gone. Oliver didn’t notice that Emma hadn’t called him.

Terrible Morning

Oliver awoke to the sun shining brightly into his window and a pounding in his head. He rolled over to see that he never made it to his bed, and that Jacob was passed out on the kitchen floor. He smiled to himself. They hadn’t had a night like that since college. As Oliver stood up to head to the bathroom, he noticed what time it is. “Oh shit, Jacob wake up! It’s 8:30! We’re both going to be late for work. He stumbled over to Jacob and picked him up and carried him to the shower, stripped off his shirt and pants, and deposited Jacob in the bathtub. “Sorry buddy” he said as he turned on the cold shower. As he walked away, Jacob awoke suddenly. “You son of a bitch, what in the hell did you do that for?” he screamed. “It’s 8:35. I’m doing you a favor.” “Damn it Oliver. You get a free pass this time.” Oliver rushed to get ready for work himself. As he was getting ready to head out the door, he glanced at his phone. It was then he realized he never heard from Emma, nor were they any calls or message from Emma. He did, however, have several text messages, and missed calls. The last missed call was from Amanda, a mutual friend of Emma’s and his. He dialed the number back, and a panic stricken voice quickly answered, “Where the fuck have you been? I’ve been trying to call you all night!” “Sorry, I was busy last night.” Noticing the panicked tone in Amanda’s voice he inquired, “What’s the matter?” Amanda began crying. Oliver began to worry, “Amanda, tell me what is the matter?” he demanded. “Emma’s…her plane…crashed. The news is saying no survivors.” Oliver dropped the phone and ran to the living, tears already forming in the corner of his eyes.

Switching on the television, the news confirmed what Amanda had told him. “A San Francisco bound plane from Chicago crashed last night just outside of Colorado Springs. According to eyewitness reports, a large explosion was seen high in the sky around 10:45 last night, and debris began raining down. Few reports have come in, but police are saying that they don’t believe they will locate any survivors, and are in recovery mode.” Oliver folded to his knees and began screaming “No! No! It can’t be true!” Jacob, hearing the commotion from the other room, came running in there, and seeing his friend on the floor in front of the television, he glanced at the screen and quickly ascertained what was going on. “Oh Oliver, no, I’m so sorry.” Jacob kneeled down and wrapped his arms around Oliver, holding him tightly as he screamed and cried.

He placed his hand on Oliver’s cheek, and wiped away a tear, and then moved his hand to Oliver’s shoulder. “Oliver, you will get through this. This is horrible. I’m so sorry. But you will get through this. If I have to carry you through this every day, you will make it. I will always be here for you and I will never give up on you.” All Oliver could do was nod. Jacob leaned in and gave Oliver a hug. He then stood up “Okay, I need to get dressed. This towel is wet and cold. I’m calling into work and I’ll call your boss too, you aren’t going anywhere.” “Okay” Oliver replied. Jacob helped Oliver up and told him to go change into more comfortable clothing. Oliver shuffled into his room to change out of his suit.

Awww that was adorable. Do you plan on taking that story somewhere? Or was that just for fun?

I've really been considering starting a book lately, but the first step is getting a laptop lol. Gotta keep track of all that stuff.

Aw I liked that story. I definitely want to read more though! It managed to make me feel emotional, although that could be a mix of tiredness and internal sadness, haha. Literally, it's six in the morning and I haven't been to sleep. Oh well! Great story, I can't wait to hear more!

I revised that last paragraph to enforce the mood a little better.

An hour later, Jacob was still lying beside Oliver, holding him tightly. Oliver’s phone had rang several more times, as had Jacob’s. Oliver turned over, inches away from Jacobs’s chest, and put his head on Jacobs chest and let out a deep sigh. Finally breaking the silence, Oliver said “I don’t know what to Jacob. She can’t be gone. I don’t think I can live without her.” Jacob sat up and pulled Oliver up with him, finally releasing his grip on Oliver. He placed his hand on Oliver’s cheek, and wiped away a tear, and then moved his hand to Oliver’s shoulder. “Oliver, you will get through this. This is horrible. I’m so sorry. But you will get through this. If I have to carry you through this every day, you will make it. I will always be here for you and I will never give up on you.” All Oliver could do was look up and meet his friend’s gaze. His entire world was crumbling beneath him, falling into the black hole of despair.

Make sure you make there personalitys distinct, if you know what I mean. Right they are just "Oliver" and "Jacob", I can't really attach anything to the names.

Of course, that was a short story, so nothing to worry about yet ^_^

From this point forward, I'm posting the chapters to my EC blog on my page. I've set it where anyone should be able to view and comment. Please go to my blog and subscribe to get updates of when new chapters are posted. I may at some point post it in a thread, but for now I thought it would be easier to use the blog.

I really like it All 5 chapters so far are so easy to visualise! it's almost like watching a short movie in my head.
